I have this 110V model of the Princeton 65 DSP and Im in China (220V) so I accidentally plugged it in using the wrong transformer. So, I saw some spark (blew a fuse) and the unit died. I bought the right transformer now and I opened up the amp and saw that the fuse blew. I found some replacement fuses around the house but it is not the recommended 2A specs. Luckily when I plugged my amp it got to work again. My question is this:

Is there any possibility that there are some electric current that escaped the fuse and could have damaged some chips or capacitors, power supply or even the circuit board slightly? Im worried because somehow at clean channel at level 1-2, I can hear a very faint Overdrive sound as if the Dirty channel is crossing over, And when all knobs are turned to 0 I still can hear faint guitar sound. Im thinking if this could be some after effect of the short circuit (if there is any). Should I worry about it much or just think of it as only a minor case of a “BLOWN” fuse. It’s the first real good sounding amp I have had in all my years of playing so..

Also I couldn’t find 2A rated fuser here what rating can I use for the meantime to enjoy playing? Generaly its working fine with all the effects working, input working, channels working etc.

Thanks so much. Talk about amplifier Hypochondria. :-P

By the way..the temporary replacement fuse im using now is some fuse with like a wound filament...I bought a 3A straight filament and 2.5 straight filament but Im still scouring the streets of shanghai to find a 2A one...do you think the one I have inside I think its a 13.5 or 3.5A wouldnt do any much damage for now..until I find a replacement...its pretty hassle to take the unit head off actually...and put it back again..hehe

Hi chichi,

The fuse is there to protect the amp from damage. It is possible that other damage was done before the fuse blew, but "barely hearing it" doesn't sound like much of a problem to me. If you use anything other than the correct rating fuse, you risk further damage. If you were fortunate enough to only blow the fuse, count your blessings, and only use the amp with the correct fuse.

Actually..its really hard here, since I cant speak much chinese,so the store keeper of this electric shop..gave me the wrong transformer.sigh..oh well..the amp was a gift from my friend who left shanghai for the states..so its been with him quite a while..so I guess.the small sound problems are due to age...and Im still trying to convince myself that..

"its only a blown fuse"
"its only a blown fuse"
"its only a blown fuse"

hahah thank you for your reply...

Also for 220V usage you should be dropping to a 1 Amp fuse. The 2 Amp rating is only for 100 - 120 Volt usage.

Good point No457 Snowy, although I thought that he was using an external transformer rather than changing the internal transformer. Do I have that wrong chichi? If using an external transformer to drop the voltage to 110 to plug the amp into, then leave the fuse the same. If you changed the internal transformer on the amp to plug the amp directly to 220, then the fuse change to 1 amp would be correct.

I just scoured the streets for a 2A fuse..I just came back to the office..but I think I have to go to this place called Baoshan District where they sell a lot of electronic parts to find one..

... yeah I was thinking about that over lunch...I havent changed the internal transformer. I just bought an external one to convert 220-110. So is it right to use the same 2A 250V fuse?

If using an external transformer to drop the voltage to 110 to plug the amp into, then leave the fuse the same. If you changed the internal transformer on the amp to plug the amp directly to 220, then the fuse change to 1 amp would be correct

GOT IT! thanks..cant wait to rock!!! haha..

In that case you'll be OK to leave the 2 Amp fuse. You'd only need to drop to 1 Amp if you were going straight to the 220 wall voltage and changed the internal Trannsformer to suit 220V.

But don't go higher than 2 Amp, it's there to protect your amp, if you go higher, something else may fail before the fuse does!

Good Luck.

Snowy
