I already have a topic here about my first BDRI problem, but I feel like my experience since then warrants a new topic to tell people to steer clear of this amp.

So, to make a long story short I bought a brand new BDRI and immediately it had a terrible rattle and one of the tubes was bad. I took a look inside the amp and it turns out they hadn't finished putting screws into the amp. Round 2 - I returned this amp for another new one and this time the reverb doesn't work. I took out the reverb tank and sure enough one of the blue wires inside is hanging loose and is not soldered onto where it should be.

Either I somehow stumbled onto two lemons or these amps are just MIM junk. Way over priced at $750. I am returning this one and not buying another Fender product again.

Maybe the builders are having to duck the Mexican drug cartel bullets flying all over the place down there and not concentrating on their work, huh? Fender needs to tighten quality control while building in Mexico, or face being compared to CBS in a bad way. I wouldn't let the Hot Rod series spoil the fun on all of the other equipment they make though.

Hi thunderwood,

Sorry about your experience, I thought that the BDRI was a decent amp. Maybe the third time is a charm! I've heard of problems with the reverb tanks wiring in several models of amps lately, I'd blame the tank manufacturer, although it is a reason to return the amp. Since you already have it apart, why not just solder the wire on, chock it up to experience and enjoy the amp? To me, it would be easier to solder on a wire, than to return the amp. If you do return it and get another, try it out in the store before lugging it home.

These recent reports -- and their increasing frequency -- remind me of the QA/QC issues with Detroit some two or three decades ago and why I'll never own a "big three" motor vehicle again.

Hmmm, maybe my imagination wasn't running as wild as I thought it was.

Quote:
Maybe the bean counters have crunched the numbers and come up with their most brilliant plan yet:

"Let's just stop wasting time and money soldering all the connections and hope the new owners solder em up because chances are they will, since it'll just be a real PIA for them to send the whole amp back to us. If the odd few do send the amp back, sure, we'll fix it! Actually, if we do that we can also stop wasting time on the Quality Check procedures for that part, since we already know it ain't working!! Let's just try it on the Reverb units first and see how the numbers come back!!"
(High-Fives all 'round the table as the meeting closes).

As you can see my imagination is running wild.

Third time the charm?? You've got to be kidding me. I wouldn't have gotten the second one. And yes, I've seen other posts on other forums regarding Fender reverb tanks that were never completely finished. What are these guys on piece work?

Yea there is no way that I would keep an amp that has such a glaring problem from the onset. If this problem exists, who knows what else is lurking as far as problems go. Also I'd have to be pretty dumb to get a third one of these, I'm going to try another brand.

Other than a few ribbon cables vibrating against the back panel, my BDRI has been trouble free. I replaced the stock Groove Tubes with JJs and it sounds fantastic. Sorry to hear that you are having problems with yours.

Rather than avoiding any Fender product you could just avoid the HotRod series of amplification. The issues poeple describe with the Hotrod series helped me avoid the high cost of returns. Nevertheless, Fender has some great products such as their guitars, pickups and assessories, and the 5 year warranty is better than any LCD TV, Computer, furnature, appliance, used car, ps3, etc..

my BDRI has been hastle free... although i wouldnt reguard anything less than the thing blowing up and killing me as a hastle 8)

that said when i got it i did have to take it apart and tighten the skrews holding the valve cages onto the chassis... they were only half in bt its no big deal... mabe i jus got one of the few amps that actually work bt if this amp got destroyed... id buy another 1 exactly the same...

i do agree that the mex dudes building these amps should spend more time building the amps rather than being on a lunch break... bt im happy with the quality of everything else...

My BDRI which was a floor model at GC has been hassle free and sweet for over a year and half.

No warnings here.

I agree. Fender still makes some nice stuff. I'll never own another HRD Series amp and for me the VM (Vintage Molested) series don't do it for me either.

When I was looking at a new amp I really liked the look of the BDRI. The reverb on the BDRI on display did not work, so I upped my cost and bought a DRRI. It's been a great amp and I have had no issue with it. I also have a Twin Reverb and have had no issue with this amp either. Both made in the USA. I wonder if there is something to that as far as quality control is concerned?
