The new Cry Baby wahs are best left in the store,Vox would be a much better choice over a Cry Baby. The Fulltone Clyde wahs and the Teese RMC Picture Wahs are a bit pricey but are way ahead of any other pedals out there as they are the ones that come closest to the sound of the old 60s Vox and Cry Baby pedals.I have both old 60's Vox and Cry Baby wahs and the RMC and Clyde come closest to nailing that old "vomit" sound that the originals had.

It's still all a matter of taste. I'm fine with a plain old Crybaby. A wah just isn't that big a deal. It doesn't get anywhere as much as say a distortion, fuzz or boost pedal. Your audience won't know the difference.

The plain old Crybaby is this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Rare-JEN-Wah-Fasel-new-Hot-Potz-II-/180604982232?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2a0ce553d8

The dumbflop thing is like a deviant distant relative. Best ignored, forgotten about and stayed away from.
Funny how all the dumbflop/modern vox (cos their much the same) users forget about wah very quickly. Entirely down to the poor quality of the effect, I suspect.

Anyway, that's where I'd be looking for a good wah at a reasonable price. Don't get hung up about fasel colour, outside of dating it's of little importance. You'll pay a fortune for a vintage vox. The old Jen's are great, sound right, and in America particularly, don't sell for much.

Lots of people heap hate on Crybaby, but I enjoy mine. I don't use it often, but it's fine when I do.

If your up for making a mod to the more recent marketed vox and crybabys check out th BYOC Vintage Wah, it has the sounds you stated. The mod kit replaces the circuit of any crybaby wah, and the best part is it is very diverse and can be tweeked to suit your setup.

I added a Gain and Q pot for more tweeks as these seem to make some difference when I use it with different amps.

I'm in no way affiliated with BYOC, but they do have some usable stuff.

Get funky.

How do you like that OD2?

Been thinking about getting that or the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 w Mosfet...

Well Tyronne

I realy like the BYOC products and the ODII is one of my favorites. I use it alot with my el84 Carvin V16 which has almost no gain and all mids. Whenever I use the V16 I have either the boost or the OD on at all times. The boost was made to MOSFET so it colors the sound a little and the OD can go from mild to wild with a flip of a switch. The best part of the ODII is it can be tweeked with it's internal trim pots and various external switches and pots. I found the pedal to be a Swiss Army Kinfe of Tube Screamers. It comes with all the mods that TS808 players upgrade to, i.e, true bypass, tone mod, gain mod, Brown Chip mod, etc. Plus it can be switched to stock TS 808 with a flip of the switch.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. It does help!
It does seem like a Swiss-Army knife type of box and I've read other posters comments about how well the BYOC kits are.

Looks like I'll save my coin for that one! 8)

I decided to pull out my old Vox847 Wah today and do some work on it. I replaced the switch with a 3PDT and wired it for true bypass as detailed on the Fulltone website. Then I pulled the PCB and did the following mods (All resistor changes):

Volume Mod to restore unity gain with the true bypass.
Vocal Mod.
Gain and Bass mod.
Midrange mod.

These mods are all over the internet but are well detailed on this site: (see DIY Resources section).
http://www.wah-wah.co.uk/

After these changes the pedal is definitely a much improved Wah to use, it sounds much nicer and more vocal like when it's on and there's no "tone suck" when switched off.

As an aside, I tried to order the BYOC kit to build and drop into the old Dunlop Cry Baby I have, but I find they won't ship international, but only sell through a network of International distributers. It's a pity the Aussie distributers are charging like a wounded bull with double the prices on the BYOC website (Aussie dollar is at parity with the US dollar, and shipping for that small package would be about $15.00. So that's just a nasty rip-off by the Aussie distributers).

Snowy,

Sorry to here about the dealers and the Australian Dollar. The US Dollar sucks right now and the stuff here should be way less than there down under or in Europe.

But it sounds like your old Wah is rejuvinated. Perhaps ther is no need for a BYOC mod. And that Vox will sound great through your 5e3.
