I bought a Fender Blues DeVille 410 close to a year ago. I purchased it new and it was shipped to my house. I began to notice a rattling noise when I play an A note or chord. This only happens on the A note or chord and otherwise never heard. It sounds like broken glass being shaken around or maybe BBs in a glass jar. My first thought was that the tubes could be bad, maybe damaged in shipping or something. So just yesterday, I ordered an entire set of new tubes to put in. I started thinking today: What if it is not the tubes?
So, my questions are:

1. What else could cause that sound?
2. Should I also buy some dampening rings for my new tubes? Because I have heard a lot of people say that combo amps are tube killers. Dampening rings are just thick silicone rings that go around the tube to absorb some of the shock from being inside near the speakers will all of the vibrations.
3. 2 of the 12AX7s are enclosed within some sort of foam or silicone material. What is that? Is it basically what the dampening ring is? Does it just shock protect the two tubes that it covers? Why does it only cover those 2 tubes?
4. I do not do any of my own amp work, I will even be taking it to a technician to have it re-tubed. Should I have him look it over for other causes of the problem if it is not the tubes? And if so what should I have him look for and ask him to fix?

Any other ideas or things I may have missed would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Colton

Hi cowboyhat05,

It could be a tube rattling, or it could be something loose on the amp that's causing the noise. Make sure that all of the screws are tight, especially the chassis, baffle and speaker screws. You're right, the foam is a dampener for the first two tubes, and is stock. Dampening rings might be a good idea, couldn't hurt, but they can have an affect on the tone. I use the rings on a few of my amps as a preventative measure, BJr, HRDlx, HRDvl. If you do install new tubes, make sure your tech sets the bias correctly for the new tubes.

I owned a 1993 USA blues deville 4x10 and it did the same thing.
turns out they use some 1/2 watt resisters that like to overheat and burn up.
fixed my problem on the spot, that was after I had spent an hour or so checking and touching up solder joints.

Thank you guys. I will keep these things in mind. I am going to go ahead and have the tubes changed, and install a few dampening rings. I will have the technician check everything over and make sure everything is tight. Hopefully this will be resolved. It is not much a problem when you're playing live, it is just annoying when I mess around at home. I have a feeling it would be a nightmare while recording as well. Thanks again guys.

DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SPEAKER NUTS!!! Check the room too. Sometimes it something on a shelf or a window frame. In all likelihood it's just tube rattle. Be careful tightening cabinet screws too unless you want to strip them and create more headaches.

My fireplace screen likes the key of "G", starts to play along, however it is not very musical.

I posted some time ago about strange vibrations/buzzing/rattling coming from by Blues Deluxe Reissue on certain notes. Turns out it was the flat ribbon cables vibratinging against the back panel of the amp. I redressed all of the cables, and put washers between the back panel and chassis on the screws to space the panel away from the amp chassis. No more strange noises. I still have to hunt down various room rattles when I get over enthusiastic with the volume knob.

I hate ribbon cables in guitar amps. Another reason I sold my HRDlx. My Rebel has zero ribbon connectors.

I had a mild springy rattle on my Supersonic combo when I played a B note. The rattle was not picked up by the mic at the front when recording at the studio yesterday but you could hear it at the back of the amp. Really annoying!! Took the amp to pieces today and tightened up every screw in the cabinet and bolts holding the chassis to the cabinet using the torque setting on my drill. When i had it to pieces I found a loose cup washer jammed against inside of the corner protector. Don`t know if this washer was the cause or a loose screw or bolt but all seems well no and I am happy again.

I just bought a used Blues Deville 410 and had problems with a buzzing sound mixed in with the note I was playing. The buzzing disappeared as the note decayed in volume when it reached a low level. I tried tightening every nut and bolt and every screw I could find with no luck.
I changed all Valves (Tubes) Still no luck.
I then tried disconnecting each speaker in turn. When I got to the second speaker I noticed that the buzzing completely stopped when I applied pressure to the fibre plate that the speaker terminals are fixed to. This plate is fixed to the speaker chassis by a rivet. I do not know if it is resonnating due to the rivet, I might try drilling it out and replacing it with a nut and bolt. For now though I have attached an elasticated loop around this little plate and fixed it to to the screw below, one of four that fixes the speaker to the front baffle. I hope this might help someone experiencing this annoying sound from what is otherwise a brilliant amplifier.

When I bough my BDRI, I notice some notes (bass) with noise, it was the speaker itself.
One simple test is to plug your instrument in "Amp-In" input, and try if you still have noise. With this, you will know if the noise is from the pre-amp or the amp and + sections.

More times than not it is not your amp, but rather something in the room rattling. You might swear it is from the amp, but it can be anything from a nearby heat register cover to a glass frame on a picture hanging on the wall....certain frequencies setting the rattle off is a good indication that it is an object probably not related to your amp. Homes and rooms are full of wierd things that rattle and shake when you play above bedroom volumes. I found a light fixture and a heat register both were the culprits of the rattle in my BJ NOS - took me days to get it worked out

Yeah I've had a fair amount of noise problems which in the end, turned out to have nothing to do with the amp. It is good to check for these problems ESPECIALLY with a multi-speaker high wattage amp like the Deville.
Had a ton of noise every time I would play a B. was just a door on a a wooden cabinet. That one was pretty obvious
One that was not obvious and took some diagnosis to find out was a very loud buzzing noise every time I'd turn the amp past 4 and play a note. Turned out it was just a cheap old speaker cabinet across the room making the noise due to a loose speaker or something.

Hello there... I have the Fender Deville 4x10 as well. Mid 2000 version. Yep I get a glass like rattle from somewhere in the amp but only when I play certain A notes. Its driving me crazy. At first I thought it was just the walls but after careful research and help from my wife we found several places in the basement (including the amp) that rattles. I am going to take the amp up stairs (brighter environment) and see if I can actually narrow down where this sound is coming from the amp.

If it means anything the rattle is the loudest on A string 12th fret.

The Deville is my first tube and boy do I love the sounds I get from her. Too bad about the rattle and not sure if I want to put more money into it. I am thinking of selling it and getting a brand new Fender Hot Rod 40watt. Would be a better size for me anyway or maybe just get the blues Jr.

Thanks for this post cause I thought I was going bonkers.. any more tips are appreciated.
