I don't know what you're price range is or how quiet of an amp you need but I can't believe nobody's mentioned the Blues Jr III. It's easily one of my favorite amps. I put a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker and the Ruby Tubes upgrade reverb tank in it and that made me like it twice as much. Sounds better than any Fender Champ or AC15 I've played, and my buddy's Egnater Rebel 20 for that matter.

Can seriously recommend the recent Vox AC4TV combo.

Built in attenuator selects between 1/4 watt, 1 watt or 4 watts.

Select 1 watt and crank it till it's breaking up, then hit it with a boost or overdive pedal. Magnificent, and the neighbours wont be outside your house with pitchforks and flaming torches..

Vibro Champ/Bronco is a great amp if you can get one. Although pricey they are a good value and will get you tube rectifier and power tube saturation. I've had the valve jr and crate v8 both el84 power tube amps, and it could not get a Fenderish sound if that's what your after. But they do take to pedal well and will give you great mid range tone. Also, if you want to build a great classic check out a clone vintage Tweed Champ.

To make a short story long, check out the youtube vids on the amps to get an idea of what they can do.

Actually the best place to see what an amp can do is in person. Most youtube videos are horrible and are not representative of what the amps really sound like. Couple that with computer speakers or a lackluster sound system and you'll never know what it really sounds like. Also you won't get a real "Fenderish" sound from EL84 power tubes. The Blues Jr is the new HRD Fender sound and is nothing like the "Classic Fender Sound" us old guys know and love. The new Vibro Champ and Champ XD are hybrid amps and aren't even close to the originals. You'll need to go vintage in Champs to get the real deal or build a clone yourself as has already been mentioned. Silverface Champs are still affordable compared to the lackluster offerings with the VM series.

I agree 63,

Although it's hard to realy get a true understanding of the amps sound on the computer videos, you can tell which sounds are the good, the bad, and the ugly. I had to listen to a lot of them the find about 3-4 decent recordings just to get a ball park soud of what they can do.
