I need some advise. I have a Mustang I, a good amp but I don't think it's for me. I have a Crate GX120...TOO loud. I only bought it because I found it used/very inexpensive/and I didn't know my needs. I think I would be happy with a high quality small tube amp with mainly the basics. Does Fender have an amp that sounds great at low volume? I have been thinking of trying a 5w Bugera that has a 5/1/.1 watt switch, but always trust Fender for quality, and price.

Hi tvr1979,

Check out the Fender Champion 600, 5 watt, all tube amp (one 12AX7 and one 6V6). The C600 is a simple and inexpensive tube amp that has some of the flavor of an older Champ amp. Regular price is about $150, but it is often on sale for as low as $100 if you're patient.

Other suggestions are:

- Fender VibroChamp XD (not a pure tube amp - it's a hybrid)
- Epiphone Valve Jr.
- Bugera V-5 (has a built in attenuator and headphone jack)

Or look for a 70's SF Champ. The tiny speaker in the 600 kills it for me. By the time you dump the cheap tubes and speaker and mod the snot out of it, your getting into SF Champ territory. Before I'd get a 600, I'd get a VHT Special 6. Nice amp, 6 watts, 10" speaker, and hand wired for around $200. http://www.vhtamp.com/avsp16.html

The Egnater Rebel line also gets good review. Dont know your budget, you may want to look into a used champ tweed clone or deluxe.

+1 on the Rebel. I have the Rebel 20 and it's a great sounding, reliable amp. The Tweaker is great and the VHT Special 6 and Jet City amps are greattoo. I'd steer clear of Bugera and the 600. You can do a lot more for your hard earned bucks. Like I said, a SF Champ would be great. My 74 Champ has been awesome.

Vibro Champ/Bronco is a great amp if you can get one. Although pricey they are a good value and will get you tube rectifier and power tube saturation. I've had the valve jr and crate v8 both el84 power tube amps, and it could not get a Fenderish sound if that's what your after. But they do take to pedal well and will give you great mid range tone. Also, if you want to build a great classic check out a clone vintage Tweed Champ.

To make a short story long, check out the youtube vids on the amps to get an idea of what they can do.

Egnater tweaker for me... that way you can sound like a very reasonable facsimile of all the amps mentioned.

Thanks again, I purchased a used Vibro Champ and I think it's just what I was looking for. Less than a new $149 Bugera V5 that also gets some great reviews. I looked at it... and considered it, but I'd rather trust/own a used Fender.
