Was fiddling around with my HotRod Deville 410, trying to reduce some hissing noise (even at low volumes) What I found was that as I was tapping one of the pre-amp tubes, it was definitely being picked up and amplified through the speakers. The other 2 pre-amp tubes did not suffer from this problem, nor the 2 power amp tubes. Does this indicate a possible tube problem, or is this to be expected?

Sure it can, please try another 12AX7 (JJ, GT, Tungsol, EH ...) instead of the one that makes hiss.

That tube has become microphonic and should be replaced.

Get some damper rings for your new tubes. The tubes in a HDR are very close to the speakers. I hear the rings help quite a bit.

Thanks flyinjw -- Do they have any impact on the sound of the amp?

Hi Wannabeec,

Yes, the tube dampener rings will have an affect on the sound, you will just have to listen with and without to hear the difference, it isn't huge but it's noticeable, maybe a little tighter sound with the rings, hard to describe really.

Here's what I used in my HRDlx from herbies Audio

http://herbiesaudiolab.net/guitar.htm

I think actually hearing a difference besides the lack of rattle is all in the head. I've used tube dampers in my combos for decades and never heard a tonal difference. Sounds like something Eric Johnson made up. I'm not a total skeptic. I can hear a difference in neck materials and tone woods, but tube dampers? Nah The HRD series amps tube are seriously close to the speakers. Those amps would work better as a head.

 I would take Eric Johnson's advice on tone over anyone else, any day. :)

Great player but is a little off the hook and OCD about his dirty power and things he can hear. He claims he almost destroyed his fan base and career over his craziness. If you ever read about what he has to do to his rig and all the rules he needs to follow you'll understand what I mean. He's extremely obsessive compulsive. He has certain non grounded power strips he needs to use, He has to raise a pedal off his pedal board on a certain block of wood at a certain height or he thinks his tone won't be "pure". He is extremely talented, but comes off as a nut job.

I do run George L's cables, not because EJ does, but because I like them.

True! The same thing has been said about me too, albeit not for my guitar playing or tone.

Like I said, I have been told they help.

I have not received mine yet, but I am going by on the advise of someone who pointed out that the tubes in a HRD are closer to the speakers than any other combo out there.

They do help and I doubt you'll hear any difference in tone. Old audiophiles started that with their tube driven stereo amps. It was because of the frequency range of their equipment and the recordings they played. There you may hear a difference, but not in a guitar amp. They helped my HRDlx. I sold them with my amp otherwise I would have given them to you. Sorry.

Thanks, Maybe I'll give them a try after hearing you're advice...although like you I'm seriously thinking of selling this baby...too much amp for me. I'm thinking of the Deluxe Reverb reissue.

Cheers
