I 100% agree. Or at least some other combination of cosmetics that set it apart more than just cream knobs. I think what started the confusion and the negative reaction to the CVR is that it looks like a BF reissue and a lot of guys are expecting a 65 Vibrolux when they get it. It sounds more like a cross between a Tweed and a Brown so dress it in the appropriate clothing.

You might be right about that. As a "blonde" it had its own personal (visual) vibe that immediately distinguished it from the BF re-issues. When FMIC switched it to black Tolex it lost that defining identity, thus its special niche in Fender's amp line-up.

Someone already said that the CVR is an amp people love to hate. It's also true that the vinatage VRs do not command the same high prices of many other vintage models. I believe this to be because of the nature of the VR itself. I have a SFVR and it is a fantastic amp but not in the hands of a less experienced player. The VR is one of the mose sensitive amps Fender made. It responds to touch in a way that most Fender amps do not. You've heard the expression, "make it whisper or scream". That's the VR's specialty. It amplifies the way you touch the guitar. As a result it is one of the most artistically expressive amps out there but it's also an amp to hate because it will expose every mistake you make and every flaw in your technique. Most people love the DR more than all others. I would argue that the VR (in the hands of someone who knows their way around a fretboard) is "The Holy Grail" of vintage Fender tone.

If the CVR is truly appealing to you, I would suggest you look for a used SFVR. You should be able to find one for about the same price as a new CVR and possbly even less and you'll get a better built, better sounding amp that will hold it's value far better.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thank you all. I'm not into the "gotta be a perfect reissue camp" -- I've got a Band-Master VM, for cat's sake! -- but I want a good sounding amp that supplies something missing from my current collection. I'm heading to Austin for a gig in April: maybe I'll be able to check one out then.

If you can afford one and it fits your style of play, "Go for it".

I see them often on Ebay and C/L priced as low as $600. For that money I'd be tempted to give one a go, replacing the speakers with something more befitting and perhaps giving the Fromel mods a try.

You may have some difficulty finding them in stores to try. A friend of mine who works at GC said they almost never stock them as they are very slow sellers. Last time I was in Sam Ash in San Antonio they did have one. So hopefully you will luck out and find a store with one in stock. Try it before you order one though.

I can definitely agree with this.
