I'm a little curious about this, too. I notice the cabinet is no longer listed anywhere, which could be a problem with the 2 ohm output of the head. Maybe they made a LOT of heads? I'm surprised they weren't more popular. I have one I got a couple of years ago, and it can do anything and it weighs 26 lb (speaker + head) and pumps out 250 watts. Maybe guys just gotta have a big honkin' amp.

The JM is small and unobtrusive: I can use it at a coffee house, or church, or a dance hall and it doesn't look out of place.

But Fender may have decided that that's not their market niche. Genz-Benz is pushing small, powerful, lightweight amps, and players may be readier to buy one that doesn't have the "Fender" label on it (I have an 18 lb, 300 watt G-B bass amp, too, so I'm into small and light -- just to make it clear, I plug my Precision into it!).

It's actually a pretty nice amp. I didn't care for the gain on it too much. I think the problem may be that the price tag is a little high for a solid state head. Some people use solid state amps because of their affordability and no need for periodic maintenance. I would recommend the JM over the Frontman Series any day of the week. It's a shame the Crate Powerblock is no longer around too. It was a great, cheap, 150 watt backup amp. A buddy of mine saved the day for me with one the first time my HRDlx took a dump on stage. It got me through the night and I thought it sounded a little better than the HRDlx. (Though I was pretty pissed off at the time so maybe my ears weren't working as well as they usually do  )

You could use a 4 or 8 ohm cabinet with the JM, you just wouldn't get the same power output from it.

your ears didn't deceive you. the JMs are great sounding amps. very, very portable, and enough power to blow your ear drums out.

ciao,
johnny.

I A/B'd mine with a friend's 11/67 SFSR which, up until then, was the best sounding amp I had played through. With my '70 LP Deluxe with Seymour Duncan minis, the two amps sounded very similar. The owner of the Super began borrowing the JM to use with his Fishman-equipped Martin acoustic and was very happy with it.

I believe that Fender could have sold a lot had they designed it at a lower price point -- but, then, I wouldn't want to give up any features.

I don't see the price point as the deal-breaker. The amp is competitive in price and features with similar products. I have had one since 2006 and absolutely adore the babie. I prefer the JU to Clarus, Hendriksen, etc., but I am a long time Fender fan and perhaps just a bit prejudiced. It has become my go-to amp for composing and arranging. The JU has a lovely voice; it is transparent and delivers the nuances of different guitars. However, it is distinctly, if subtly, very much a Fender voice (which is one reason I chose it). Maybe many players interested in an amp of this sort want a more neutral amp like an Acoustic Image?
Or maybe Fender has not marketed the product effectively? I have found a lot of players are totally unaware of the JU, and are always impressed with it.

That very well might be the case. When I found out about it, I ordered one from the local Fender dealer -- he had never heard of it! I wrote a glowing review and posted it on his web site but it remains invisible.

Love the amp. But, I wish Fender had offered an open-back cabinet. I ended up buying a 2 ohm Jensen Neo and put it in an open-back Mesa Boogie cabinet. I guess I'm just too used to the sound from that kind of cabinet or a combo amp with no back.

For the last year I have hardly picked up a guitar. My playing partner has been in SC, and the people around here want me to play bass/harmonica. We're working up an arrangement of City of New Orleans and I decided to pull out my 335. I plugged it into the JM, and damned if it isn't still terrific! Not to mention, light and easy to move around. I keep the amps in a room down a couple of steps and play in the living room, so it was an easy choice to grab the Ultralight. Great, articulate sound. I just put a Bigsby on the 335, so I was interested in "clean." No problem there. The only issue is that my friend came back from SC, and he always wants to use the Fender when we play. Maybe I ought to get another one.

I'd like my Jazzmaster and 2 ohm Fender cab too if the damn thing worked. The idea of it is wonderful, but mine cuts out and shuts itself off from time to time. Not a good thing for a pro player on a gig. I got the amp to be bulletproof so I didn't have to worry about losing a tube out on the road in one of my tweed boutiques. I guess you need to have tube amps for backup on the new Fender transistor stuff and who do you call to fix it? Back in Leo's days all I had to do was pick up the phone and call. Now they hide numbers deep in sub sub menus and nobody knows anything.

Follow up post. The amp just stopped working. After dealing with the testiness of the Jazzmaster Ultralight I have decided to return to tubes. Transistors are just too damn unreliable and when they go good luck finding someone to repair them - if they can still get parts from Fender. Sad to see a great brand go down. Leo was right to split. Back to boutiques for me.

Fender follows some unfortunate practices in their amplifier production, and one is the use of those damn cheap, molded plastic input jack units. They are not robust enough for pro use, in my opinion. My Jazzmaster is fine, but I had a Bassman 400 2-10 amp that acted like yours. It sounded wonderful with my '51 Precision Reissue plugged in, but when it cut out it lost all its charm. I traded mine for a set of congas (no electronics to break!). I'm not saying that it's the input jacks, but I suspect, that if visible parts are that way, other parts inside that are more likely causing the problem are just as cheap. I hope my Ultralight doesn't develop any problems. Of course, if it does, I have a Deluxe Reverb for backup. Leo had to use available parts, and was notoriously cheap, but in his day the components were at least made out of a recognizably strong material.
