Think about a vacuum tube in terms of an incandescent light bulb.

When's the last time you ever witnessed a bulb failure while it was powered up?

Nope......the light generally blows up during the current surge that occurs during start-up. Conversely, switching the same bulb off by dramatically killing the input voltage strains the filaments nearly as severely.

And while it's true that total use hours, maximum plate voltages, and bias settings figure into a tube's overall service life, it's the heating up and cooling down that causes the lion's share of the failures.
