Do you fellow DRRI owners normally turn standby "on" before shutting down power to the amp? When I do this I get the loud pop but don't if I just shut down power without putting the amp into standby first. Is there any benefit to the tubes by turning standby on then turning the power off?

I let all of my amps warm up in "standby" mode for five minutes prior to playing them. Likewise, I let them cool down in "standby" for a minimum of ten minutes before complete shutdown.

My tubes generally last for decades.

The popping is is a common if somewhat annoying feature of the DRRI. It helps a tiny bit if you turn down both volumes before engaging standby. I've heard that the rectifier tube should really make it unecessary to switch off via standby but I'm no expert and have got used to bracing myself for the pop, as I always put it into standby after playing anyway.

Pop is due to a "transient" that is applied on the sound transfo and finally on the speaker. this transient can be produced when you switch off the supply, this creates a sudden undervoltage (Volt = L*di/dt) (and arking on the switch) due to energy (Ecoil=1/2*LI^2) accumulated in the coil that has to be evacuated (energy in a coil shall be fully restituated and on the contrery can stay accumulated in a capacitor).
If it is unacceptable, contact a good tech, this can be improved by managing this energy (cap resistor even supply caps)

I have his thing where I turn on my amp, and the standby, then I forget to turn standby off. Is this bad? Running the amp in standby at all times? I imagine that it could be, but I usually forget to turn off standby. Hope I'm not risking big time damage!

There's this thing called "cathode poisoning," which can occur when standby is left on for LONG periods of time. The effect supposedly happens when heater is fully hot, but no electrons are passing through the plates. The coating on the cathode can be effected, resulting in weaker emissions under B+ load (when standby is turned off).

Now realistically, I have only seen cathode poisoning or stripping in rectifier tubes. And mostly in amps with TOO MUCH capacitance off the first filter cap, next to the rectifier. But, Ham Radio equipment and old High HV transmitters are subject to cathode poisoning & stripping. So it's a known effect.

Arjay, that's the way I've done it for years, and I bought Dave Funk's amp book and he says to turn off the on/off switch first, and I've also seen several others say that.....I can't see why it would be better...can you?

Nope.

I treat my amps just like I learned to do with high-power transmitters (radio, radar, microwave) in the military. Others may do as they will.

Arjay,
Wouldn't the life expectancy of a tube depend more on hours used, bias settings, and volume settings? I mean, I'm not saying don't use your standby switch, but in the overall scheme of things, it just seems like how we turn on/off the amp has very little to do with a tubes life expectancy. I'm sure it plays a role, but i'm thinking a very small role. From what I've heard, older tube amps didn't even have standby switches, and those tubes seemed to last pretty long. I also know that vintage and NOS tubes where built better than they are today. But even in todays day and age, tube manufacturing has come a long way. Anyways, your always a good source of information so I look forward to hearing your response. Rock on....
