i am considering the fender twin reverb 65 reissue as my next amplifier. i have only played on stand alone heads running through cabs and have never purchased a combo amp before. so my question is...

can i use an external cabinet with the twin reverb reissue while STILL having the internal speakers active? essentially, i would like to use an additional 2x12 cab in accompaniment to internal speakers. is this possible?

many thanks.

The TRRI is designed and optimized to run a 4-ohm speaker load (ie: 2 x 12-inch 8-ohm speakers internally, wired in parallel). Some "mis-match" is permissable, but only within limits. I routinely run mine with an additional 8-ohm extension cab, which brings the impedance down to (roughly) 2.6 ohms. Anything below that is tempting fate IMO. Thus, if your 2 x 12 enclosure is 8 ohms total I think you'll be safe.

Ditto what Arjay said and try a closed back extension cab for a nice
punch to the added twin's speakers.

+1

You'll also find that the bass-reflex cab projects much better when used at outdoor venues whereas the combo alone will fall on its face. Here's my typical configuration for a medium/large gig......

The amp is equipped with a pair of JBL K120s while the Dual Showman cab contains two JBL 15-inch D130Fs. Folks in the next county over have no problems hearing me.
