My Frontman 65R amp is making loud popping noises when i turn it on. i'm talking VERY LOUD unbearable gunshot sounds. i turn it off immediately. i did this 3 times till i was afraid i'd blow the speaker on top of it.

Here's a little background: I bought it new at Guitar Center sept 2009. i have only used it in my studio doing guitar parts and overdubs....country, rock, troprock music---nothing screaming for very long. it did a good job on my last album i finished in Oct 2010.

I've never taken it out of the studio or barely moved it around in there.i took about a 2 month break on using it till December 2010 when i turned it on and it started popping and raising hell.

What do you guys think happened to it? i never had a clue as to any trouble.... :?: thanks...jw

You could try contact cleaner (for switches and pots) on the power switch. But, it sounds like it could be an issue with solder points. Or perhaps the diodes in the main power supply section. If the cleaner doesn't help, prolly best to have a tech look at the amp.

thanks, yea i went ahead and took out the chasis since it was out of warranty. looking for bad solder joints, power transistor legs kicked up, etc. nothing so far. i mean i couldn't have babied this amp any better.....it just decided to do this for no reason. :|

If you have a soldering iron, may want to touch up the solder points. Cold solders are unfortunately common and don't have to rear their ugly heads, when the unit is brand new.

I put a small alligator clip on solid-state device bodies when soldering, to avoid frying them. And use a thin iron tip. Better for circuit boards.

Good luck!

Aren't these amps sold with the five-year transferable warranty?

I have a 65R and had the same problem. I bought mine used so no warranty. Took it to my electronic tech and he found a resistor that was cut short on one end thus not making a very good connection. He replaced and resoldered the resistor.Found two other iffy parts and replaced them too. Seven dollars for parts.

I now have a 65R that is better then new. Retroverbial mentioned the Fender five year warranty. Fender just replaces the complete board. I had mine fixed. Put it back together and let Fender make it right for you. Can't go wrong with a five year warranty.Have not heard of any problems with the replacements.
