Greetings:

I have a 2005 FENDER Pro Tube Pro Reverb I'm attempting to restore, possibly to put up for sale locally. I'm having the cabinet restored and putting a JENSEN C12N back in it. Here is my dilemma... The lip around the upper edges of the chassis frame has some damage. Three of the screw holes where the chassis bolts onto the cabinet are damaged (stripped threads). Does anyone know where I might be able to get a new chassis frame, or get it repaired. I've contacted FENDER and they are giving me the runaround over this issue. It's not like I'm unwilling to pay for the repair.

Thanks!

are you just worried about the holes being stripped through?
thats an easy fix.
if worse comes, go to your local cabinet shop, they will make you a box in no time.

Thanks... but it's not the cabinet, it's the metal chassis frame that's damaged, the cabinet is A-OK.

Runaround? Fender doesn't do amp repairs or sell chassis', what do you mean by runaround? Have you thought about the little threaded metal clips that you can get at any hardware store for just such a repair? Or, use screws that are slightly larger and re-thread the holes with the new screws.

Thanks!

I was under the impression that FENDER did their own repairs. They did in fact offer some service center sites.

Below is a little better description of my dilemma posted on another site.

"There aren't any suppliers for reissue chassis. Is this one where they use cage nuts that can be replace? If so, try McMaster.com."

"Thanks...

They're not cage nuts. They are a type of hex nut flattened on top so that they fit perfectly flush against the underside of the lip. I tried to epoxy a hex nut in place, but it didn't hold.

I'm not good at fixing things that require "improvising". My hand/eye coordination isn't the greatest. I had a stroke two years ago and it affected my vision. I can still play my guitar (I've actually improved), and I can assemble some things that are relatively intuitive and stress free. My soldering skills are limited to soldering speaker wire onto terminals. Beyond that... forget it. I can be a real klutz (and dangerous!)"

oh ok. you need those holes retapped.

it would also be very helpful in posts like this
if you included a couple pics to help us along.
besides, we like pics of just about anything. :)

I've decided that this is going to be too much of a hassle for me. I might just keep it as is and use what I have for spare parts. I still have one PTPR that is in excellent shape and I'll just keep that one running.

Thanks for your efforts and advise!

Is it possible to run a long bolt through the chassis and use a nut on the other side, in place of the threaded portion? Kinda like how older Fender amps are held in the cab?

I've never worked on this era Pro Reverb, so if I'm way off target please excuse me.

If the screw holes that are stripped are the type that involves a small nut "tack welded" to the chassis then you can grind the old nut off (use a Dremel tool or take it to an engineers shop and have them do it) then use another new nut with the existing bolts.

"Keps Nuts" are good for this, once they "grab" the chassis they will stop rotating and tighten see here:

saw dust and wood glue. insert into stripped hole, allow to dry. re-thread with screw.

the larger screw idea is definitely easier, but i'd be reluctant to have different size screws if i were the modder-type of fellow who frequently removes the chassis. just seems like it'd be a pain to have to keep track of my screws.

"They are a type of hex nut flattened on top so that they fit perfectly flush against the underside of the lip."

- are you referring to Taptite screws? that'd be unnecessary for wood i'd think, unless i misunderstood the application.

btw, i think it'd be a riot if someone used 1/4 turn studs to fasten the chassis. They're a pain if you dont work to precise tolerances when installing the female clips, but hey, no more stripped threads!

Or clip-on nuts.
