The Tung-Sols are so close to a perfect 6V6 I would have to say the cost of an NOS tube is a waste of money.

I loved the Tung-Sols after replacing the stock GT tubes. But after having some NOS RCAs for a couple of months I'd say NOS are worth the extra money, if you're after the best tone you can get out of a DRRI. Unfortunately, one of the RCAs, developed a rattle and I had to put the TS back in, haven't been as happy with the tone :(

I think the 15" speaker I got in my DRRI caused the rattle, only the tube closer to the speaker rattles... so now I need to find a replacement, some heavy duty 6v6 that can handle all the vibrations coming from that speaker. Any suggestions? The two I'm considering are

TAD 6v6
or
JAN Phillips

Might be worth trying some silicon tube damper rings and see if that helps with rattle. Worth a try for a couple of bucks.

Yeah I thought about that... any idea who sells dampers for 6v6 tubes?

Not sure mate I haven't tried the damping rings myself but I suspect they may help your issue. I found these on Ebay, cheap enough to see if it will help.

Thanks Snowy! Just checked ebay too, found these, more expensive but they're down in Miami, a lot closer than China :)

6v6 dampers

I don't want to risk ruining the next set of tubes, so I'd like to have the dampers here soon... decided to order the JAN Phillips, hope I get similar results to the RCAs I had!

Ahh!, good find.

Good luck with the new (old) tubes, those rings may help them last longer and might even sound better, vibration is a good tube killer.

Let us know what you think of the dampeners when you try them. I might try a set on the 6v6's in my Tweed Deluxe.

I sure will! I might even try the dampers on the RCAs I already have cause I love the way they sound, but I have a feeling the damage is already done.

Just an update... got the dampers in today!

They do help a bit but not a big help IMO. I think a 15" in a DRRI combo is asking for trouble!

I also got the JAN 6v6 today and decided to compare tubes...

RCAs are still the best sounding! Warm, clear, sweet overtones and get handle the lows very well.

JAN Phillips are similar to the RCAs, can also handle the lows but I found them to be too bright and "glassy" sounding, had to turn down the treble on the amp.

I had 2 pairs of Tung-Sols that I tested, the pair I had in the DRRI few months back that also developed a rattle and a new pair I got recently. Surprisingly the first pair I got sounds better and very similar to the RCAs, something is not right with the 2nd pair, even though they're closely matched and rattle free. Very hard to describe what I hear, it's just not as sweet as the other tubes... both TS I tried didn't handle the lows well at higher volumes like the RCA and JAN.

I'll be keeping an eye out for RCAs and try to keep a few extras around...

This might sound like a dumb question but are you rebiasing the amp after every swap? If you are, nevermind. If not, that might be something to look into.

On another note, I dream of one day owning a DR with a 15". I heard the sound samples posted on this site and it sounds amazing. :D

DRRI with a 15 sounds HUGE! Everywhere I play you can hear it loud and clear, it really fills up the room!

If ever there was an emotion icon that needed to be created, it would be a drooling one, and it'd be plastered all over this reply. One of these days....... :(

So what's holding you up?

You can put one together for about a grand.

I've built several, beginning a few years ago with this prototype......

Someone may have already asked this, but have you tried running the amp through a separate cab? Just to see if the inboard 15-inch is causing the problems?

Unfortunatey, there is only one super tough version of the 6V6GT I know of, The Bendix Red Bank 5992. Thing weighs like a pound (well... almost). And costs way too much. The other alternative is the JAN/CTL Tungsol 5881/6L6WGB which is a very tough tube. PT & OPT would need to be able to handle extra current load. You would need to rebias to 5881 standards. Tungsols take forever to break-in. The 5992 sounds pretty good from the get-go.

Yep, I have a 1x15 cab and when I disconnect the internal speaker there are no rattles. If I stand behind the amp while playing I can feel the tube vibrating with certain low frequencies.

Thanks for the tube suggestions!
