Hi,

My name is Clay. I just got a used Fender Ultimate Chorus for Christmas this year. A few things are wrong with it and I was hoping someone might be able to help me out. First off, when I turn it on it almost always makes a loud "pop" sound. I don't know to much about amps but I know they aren't supposed to do that. Secondly, when I play it with a clean signal the speakers make a crackling sound. I'm thinking the speakers just might be really old or overused, or misused. Anyway. Last, I can't even use the chorus effect because everytime I push the button to turn it on it immediately make a really bad humming sound. I tried using the pedal and using the button on the amp, it makes no difference even with it unplugged. Oh and one more thing! I know that its a loud amp, and I shouldn't turn it up too too loud as not to blow the speakers, but I can't even turn it to the 3rd volume setting without it sounding like its about to explode. Well, I guess thats about all the information I can give on it. I'd really like to try to repair it myself so I can gain some knowledge about how the inter-workings of an amp work. So if anybody could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ;)

Hi lionheart_82184,

You must have been naughty this year to get a present like that. I guess that the best place to start is to ask; do you have the schematics and a meter, and know how to use both? If not, maybe you can inspect the speaker for dry rot, and to see if the cone is intact.

Any Fender amp in decent condition can be turned up as loud as you want. Turning up amps to maximum is a time honored tradition. The common term, "diming the amp" (dime, as in 10 cents) means turning all the amp knobs up to 10. If the amp is ready to blow its guts out at 3 then there are issues. I recommend you have it looked at by a qualified amp tech.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I am going to download the PDF for the schematics and I'm going to invest in a good current meter soon. I checked the speakers and took the board out and looked for any broken soldering or loose wires. None to be found. I don't understand it. I guess I'm going to have to test it with a meter. If that doesn't work I'll keep looking for solutions, because I really wanna keep it. It's LOUD!!!!!
