Right Shimmilou, you can see the difference between 2 "same" valves. It's difficult to show by picture, but increadible nothing is the same, the tooling is really different. (I've re-equipped my vox with JJ 12ax7 and EL84, sounds really more clean, I let it right now for a burn-in, before to replay on)

Soon I gonna show the differences of 12ax7 (JJ, Mullard, Soveck, Tung-sol, Siemens, Mesa and EH)

Cool stuff! Yes, the difference in the Plates are noticeable, and the insulators. Are both tubes used? Looks like the Sovtek has been. I have heard that some Vox amps with closed back are like ovens and rough on tubes life. How is yours?

Yeah, AC4TV is like an oven, you must take time with a screewdriver (also AC15);
The Sovteck has been used but still good, the JJ is a spare valve in case of failure a sunday !

Yes, Radiotron labeled Australian tubes were made in license with RCA. Here's a bit of history:

Here is another tube question. What is the difference between the Ruby 12AT7 and the Fender 12AX7?
They both sound clear not much gain in either.

Hi TTSC,

I believe that the 12AT7 has much lower gain than the 12AX7. Both of those tubes do look very similar inside though, hard to tell much difference. :)

Both of those tubes are Chinese. Remember there are differences between tubes inside the plates, the part you can't see.

I used them in a 5e3 and there was a small gain drop (very small) with the 12AT7 in V1. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Here is an old RCA Radiotron made in the US. As near as I can figure, the amp that this tube came out of was made in the '40s, so the tube is possibly from that same time.

Here's 4 different 6v6 tubes. Gonna try the JAN next, RCAs are the best sounding so far.

Amazing how different each tubes construction is, yet all are 6V6. Yeah, I think that just about everyone agrees that the RCA is the gold standard. Wish that I knew then what I know now, and I would've had my dad get a bunch of tubes when he worked at RCA. But back then, I thought that tubes were on the way out, and solid state was the wave of the future. Ha!
