I am very interested in the SuperChamp XD but I do have a few questions for people with experience:

1. Is there any list of the amps that are emulated by the Voice Channel?
2. Does anyone have a great experience with the stock speaker? It sounds like everyone is swapping them out.
3. Is there a difference between the Blonde model and the Black one?
4. Can anyone review just the non-effects channel? (what does this sound like? is it comparable to anything, Blues Jr. Pro Jr. Champ 600?)

Thanks in advance to any of you who might answer these.

I was at GC last week and there was a Superchamp that a guy was playing through, and I didn't get a chance to play it because he was trying to make Heavy Metal come out of it for 45 minutes or so. I am in the market for an amp, but can't find a Superchamp to play within an hour of my home. I just wanted to hear answers to these questions before I spent the time to get down there.

Hey paztormike,
I have a SCXD and it is a great amp IMO. to answer some of your questions
1)The amps it emulates are basically Black face, Tweeds, some would say Vox etc....
2)I love the stock speaker and have found no need to change it. My recommendation is to let the speaker break in. Don't go with the forum hype on mods...this amps does not need any IMO.
3)no difference between the black and blonde models....just the tolex color
4)The clean channel, Channel 1 is amazing...great fender cleans. This amp also takes pedals well on Channel 1.
Hope that this helps.

Thanks for your response ABS.

I think I really need to play one and spend some time with it.

Just askin'
What would be a good used price, if I found one on craigslist?

I'm listing some stuff locally to get a few bucks together for a Squier 60's Strat and potentially a Super Champ xd

I loved the 60's strat's tone and feel. About half of the youtube reviews of people playing the Classic Vibe guitars from Squier have them playing through Super Champs, and they seem to get some really great tones.

I also have a question regarding the Champ XD.

I just got mine two days ago, and overall it's really great. My question has to do with some of the amps: I'm not not getting enough volume even though the gain is up and my guitar volume is up. It basically sounds like no sound is coming through and I have to really crank the volume on my Jazzmaster and use the bridge pickup to get a strong signal. This mostly happens on the Tweed and Blackface settings (amps 1-6) on the 2nd channel.

Please note that the other amps (channel 1, and the "Brit" amps) sound great and I get a nice strong sound without having to crank the gain, and volume.

Any help or ideas you may have would be appreciated.

TBR,
Some of the amp models on channel 2 are lower in overall volume than say setting 3(driven tweed). It was mean to emulate the amp in question. Hope that this helps.

Hi All:

New guy here bumping an old thread instead of starting a new one.

I recently played one of these new SCXDs at my local guitar center and all I can say is Wow! This is an incredible amp for $300...Just incredible!

I know the all-tube die-hards dislike the very idea of a hybrid amp, but I believe Fender has really nailed the concept with this beauty. My word - that clean channel sounds pretty dead-on like an old Twin Reverb to my ears. Plus, I really dug several of the modeled channels (especially 3, 4, 8, and 9).

Moreover, as a solid-bodied electric mandolin player I love the strong mids on this amp, the less-harsh trebles, and the general warmth and articulation of the 10" speaker. I think this amp is pretty much ideal for me. I'm sold!

Anyways, to answer the stale question above in case anyone is still looking: A complete list of the modeled voicings on channel 2 is available on page 7 of the owners manual here: http://support.fender.com/manuals/guita ... manual.pdf

Now my question: Does anyone know if this amp will ever again be available in Blonde? There is no indication of blonde on the Fender website, and there is no new blonde example I can find anywhere.

I look forward to picking-up one of these...either blonde (I'd love one!) or Black. What an amp!

Thanks;
Ed

Hi ABS; thanks so much for the reply.
I checked with Musician's Friend and Music123 after reading your post, and I received quick replies that they did not have the Blonde Super Champ in stock, but that they might be able to special order me one. Same with my local Guitar Center & GuitarCenter.com.
The search continues!
Thanks again.

I have owned and gigged this amp for a little over 2 yrs. It is reliable and portable as it should be. Stock it sounds great but lacks character IMO. I put about 3-5 months of practicing/gigging before any mods were performed.

First thing I HIGHLY recommend is the foot switch.(Why Fender doesn't tack on an additional 25 bucks to include it is beyond me... :? ) It is a must for gig purposes. I would also recommend getting to know as well as understanding the different voicing and effects. Check out BillM(I believe he is on the forum somewhere) he has a site that deals mostly with the BJ's but has info on the SCXD
http://billmaudio.com/wp/

Second: TUBES TUBES TUBES!!!
After about 2-3 months of use the tubes went micro-phonic . At first, I thought it might be the face plate rattling or loose screws, but I wasn't fooled so easy and did the chop stick test. Not one but all of the tubes were rattling. Fender (mostly) used cheap tubes in these. I recommend Tung-Sol and/or J/J. Fender set the bias cold on these amps but can easily be set to its recommended bias with a Multimeter and a set of jumper wires.
http://www.archive.agileguitarforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=11815 I think its also on here somewhere too...

Third:Speaker... some do... some don't... I did.
This was the last mod that I performed on the SCXD. I wasn't not happy with the amps sound it just seemed sterile to my ears. I researched A LOT about the speaker swaps that people have done to the SCXD and even more research on the speakers themselves. I narrowed my search down to a WGS G10C. My experience in dealing with WGS was TOP notch and was totally blown away by the the improved overall tone from the amp.
http://wgs4.com/content/g10c yes it is my quote and no I am not a salesman for WGS. just really like there products

any who, I hope you find your path on this because these really are a gem of an amp. good luck

Here is an update on the Blonde/Oxblood SCXD:

* I received the following reply from Fender's Consumer Relations Department:
The blonde Fender Super Champ XD with oxblood grill was a FSR (factory special run) Super Champ XD that was limited to only 1,000 produced for Guitar Center & Musician's Friend. Fender has completed their production run, so these dealers would be the only place you could find one, as no more will be produced or available from Fender.

* I also received replies from both Guitar Center & Musician's Friend indicating that they no longer have any of these in stock.

* However, I have found that used examples of this amp turn-up on e-bay, and "all of Craigslist" fairly regularly. A coupe of recent ones were in very nice condition.

I'm hoping the above info will help others interested in this amp. While researching all of this, I was also watching the price/availability of the 'standard model', and discovered it deeply discounted ($199) through amazon.com/Sam Ash on Thanksgiving Day. I purchased one that morning, and it arrived on the Monday after Thanksgiving!

I've been playing my '08 MIM Standard Telecaster into the SCXD and I am incredibly impressed!! I love this amp. I think the clean channel is rich, warm and classic sounding. I also think that the modeled channels and the DSP effects sound fantastic across a wide range of volumes and effects levels. (My favorite channels are 3, 8, 9, & 13 [do you see a theme developing here? :D ). Also, I really like how responsive this amp is to the volume & tone controls on my Tele. I can't wait to receive my new electric mandolin and hear it through this baby!

SamAsh has it for $200. Don't see how you can go wrong at that price!

Now here's something interesting...
The Fender Super Champ XD has been removed from the Fender website!!
Here is the page for the Vintage Modified Amps.
I wonder if this is just a website glitch or an indication of a discontinuation of the model?

Sorry to be off-topic, but can anyone give some help/feedback in my topic 'Super Champ XD bass control'. I seem to notice a behaviour in the bass knob: it peaks at 7, not at 10...

Thanks a lot.

Hey, not off-topic at all...it's about the SCXD, right? :)

I just checked this out on mine very closely, and here's what I found:

* The bass on my Super Champ XD increases all the way to 10, though the incremental increases above 7 are very slight.

* Any effects being active (at just about any level above minimum) make the increase in bass above 7 very difficult to hear.

* The increased bass above 7 is most clear on channel one, and on the clean moded channels of channel 2.

* Here is the most noticeable way I found to hear the very slight increase in bass response above 7:
** Switch the amp to channel 2, and dial the channel 2 knob to setting 16 (acoustic).
** Dial to treble control to 5.
** Dial the effects knob to minimum.
** Dial the bass to 5...play.
** Dial the bass to 6...play.
** Dial the bass to 7...play.
** Dial the bass to 8...play.
** Dial the bass to 9...play.
** Dial the bass to 10...play.

This gave me a good feel for the variations on the bass settings.

Hope this helps.

Thanks E-Mando-Guy.

My Super champ xd actually lowers the bass after 7... I hear like a resonant peak at 7 when I strum a chord and sustain it, and then increase the bass. When it reaches 7, it becomes very round, resonant, and then after that it quiets a bit.... Possibly a pot malfunction?....
