I just purchased a new Vibro Champ XD. I'm a home player only, so I don't require much volume.

However, the first BlackFace setting, voice 4, is really quiet, and I mean almost no sound coming out of the amp. Same for voice 1. If add dial in some gain, at about 1.5 or two, the loudness increases pretty dramatically. But I really don't want a lot of gain on the first Blackface setting, I'd like it clean and chimey. I can reproduce this on the first British voice also, it needs some gain before it has any appreciable volume.

Is this the way the amp works, that it needs some gain to have some volume or is there an issue with the amp?

Thanks to all in advance.[/b]

That's pretty much how the amp works. You need some gain in order to get volume. But unless you're driving the amp with a pedal or some crazy-overwound pickups, it'll stay clean on voice 4, and reasonably clean on voice 1.

Thank you BillM. As a follow-up question, would a clean boost pedal be something I could look at to get some volume on the clean settings?

I haven't tried a clean boost on my Super Champ XD, but others have tried them on the SCXD and VCXD and have found that it's relatively easy to overload the front end. I think the SCXD would be a better choice if you want volume. Maybe your dealer would do a trade-in.

There's a real good chance my dealer would do the swap. I've a real good relationship with him.

I just have to decide if the increase in volume is worth it. I don't play out, and I practice after the family has gone to bed (or is going to bed). So, the question I have to answer is do I really need all the volume that 15 watts and the 10" speaker will give me.

If I really want clean, I do have a Frontman 25R that is clean clean for tones. I use that as my "warm up and scales" amp, when I really want to hear all of my many playing mistakes.

Thanks again for your responses. I really do appreciate them.

Still wondering for those who have the ear and knowledge. Is there anything to the difference that Fender states that the VCXD is Class A and the SCXD is Class A/B. Is there a tonal or qualitative difference worth noting? Cause, if not, it seems for the addl $50, the SC is a no-brainer. BUT, if there is a qualitative difference between the Class A vs Class A/B, and one does not need 15watts, then maybe the VC is a good way to go. But on the other Fender forum, there are very few VC users, and several happy SC users.

Dazed & Confused.

For what it's worth . . .

I bought the VCXD as a home practice amp. I get to practice in the basement after the family goes to bed (yes, this will show you how much practice I need! :). Anyhoo, I had the VCXD on voice 1, some gain, what I thought was minimal volume, and my wife appeared at the top of stairs asking me to turn it down. So for me, it's loud enough.

I'm still trying to find the "jangly" in the first British voice and to dial in a clean somewhat loud-ish jazz tone on voice 15? (the Fender JazzKing voice). If I can get those, I'll be really really happy with the VCXD. As it is now, I'm still really happy with the amp.

Glad you're happy with the amp. Mine is still at my sister's place and will ship the amp soon as i buy some extra tubes and fuse. BTW what particular type of fuse should i get for the vcxd?

ha ha

The exact same thing happened to me the other night. I was in the basement, my wife was in bed, two floors above me. She texted me that it was too loud. I have a VCXD, and the volume was at maybe 2.5 or 3 on voice 4.

I do not like the sounds I am getting on Voice 15 (jazz). It sounds too muddy, but perhaps that is partly the pickups in my Epiphone Dot.

Interesting... I'm thinking of getting the VCXD, mainly for playing after the wife and baby are sleeping. Problem is I live in an apartment, so there's no basement for me. Plus, my wife and baby are the lightest sleepers. That's what's really holding me back - the lack of a headphone jack. I'm also wondering, does the VCXD sounds good on really low volumes?

Not sure about the Vibro Champ, but the Super champ is not really great at low volumes. You might want to consider something smaller like a Champion 600 and a pod with headphone jack.
