Hey,
I just bought a used Hot Rod Deville 212 and the Reverb and Presence isn't working. Does anyone have any idea on what could cause this?

Thanks

If you just bought it, send it back if you can. Consider it an omen of things to come. :D
Lots of people, myself included get rid of stuff for a reason. I sold my HRDlx with 7 months left on the warranty.

Be sure the reverb pan is plugged in. You would have to determine whether is the connection, the reverb circuit or the reverb pan itself. The Presence can be a lot of things from a bad solder joint, faulty pot, or a mod that went bad. I would not suggest buying a HRD amp used. Some had lots of problems, some were modded heavily by hacks.Unplug it, and take the back off and look around for the obvious. Loose connections etc. Use a pencil or a wooden chop stick to probe around not your bare hands. And keep one hand in your pocket at all times unless you're really familiar with tube amps.

Like I said, send it back if you can or contact the seller.

I just sold my HRD, it didn't have any problems but I was constantly worried a problem would pop up and for how cheap you can get them it's hard to justify a big repair. I would suggest like supro said take it back if possible , it's not worth voiding a warranty over.

I sense a great disturbance in "the force".

Hi kbhill,

First of all the HRDvl is quite different that the HRDlx as far as the component heat problems that some people had with the HRDlx. Don't worry about the hype of "the whole HRd series being bad" just because some had problems with the HRDlx. It is possibly nothing more than solder joint problems on the main circuit board (or broken trace), solder joints being a very common issue with newer Fender amps of all types. In fact, bad solder joints are probably one of the most common causes of other problems too. The reverb is driven by, and recovered by, "op amps" that get their power from two 16 V supplies, positive and negative, and bad solder joints in the power supply could cause a loss of reverb. Also, make sure that the wires to the reverb tank are intact and connected. The Presence control is just an RC circuit used in the phase inverter section, and is probably a separate issue, but I would suspect solder joints also, if it is a problem. Check out this site for info on the HRDvl and HRDlx. It is mostly about the HRDlx, but a lot applies to the HRDvl also.

It ain't hype. Bad solder joints are common in the entire HRD series and so are reliability problems. People have problems with the DeVille too. Like I said, try to get a refund. You can do a lot better and used HRD amps are really cheap now that the III series came out. We have 3 mint HRDlx amps locally for $300-325 and a mint 410 Deville for $375. They go really fast too. I wouldn't accept an amp that needed repairs if the seller didn't disclose it as such.

Good link, Shimmilou ! KB, I agree with these guys on all counts. If you bought it from a friend, then it's different. I'm gonna go with faulty solder joints. A reflow may do the trick. Those 5watt resistors and their connections seem to be the usual suspects, too. Art
