Bummer cspringe2255!

You are right, those with complaints post much more about the problems than those who have no problems. In the case of the SS22, it did have a rash of problems recently, the majority of which were reverb tank problems. I have heard of some of the amps getting fixed right the first time when returned, and some that had to make a few trips to the "tech" to be corrected. But, you are correct, the problems should have been corrected by now.

It is good to hear that Fender has cleared up the confusion about the impedance matching. Maybe this will ease everyone's mind a bit. :)

I guess that these days, you have to try the amp in the store before taking it home. :o

On a positive note, you have a great amp in the HRDlx, and a V30 on top of that! I still enjoy my US HRDlx, even with the Eminence speaker. :)

Have you heard of people blowing up their amps from having an impedance mismatch of two to one? I haven't.

Seen it quite often, actually. And nearly always at the most inopportune of moments (ie: on stage).

Fenders (especially vintage Fenders) are built a bit more ruggedly than many brands. That said however, I prefer "safe and sane" to whistling past the graveyard. Arguing against the laws of physics is seldom productive and verdict always favors the plaintiff.

I don't know how I missed your post 'til now. Why do you attribute the amps problems to an impedance mismatch? I am certain that a mismatched impedance didn't cause any problem. Fender will tell you the same thing (see above posts). What actually "blew up" in the amp?

It does seem logical that less resistance would result in higher current, but there are many other considerations with a transformer, and this just isn't the case (it's AC, not DC). The laws of physics are not in question at all. The function of the output section of the amp is an area of great misunderstanding, even by those that should know.

Remember, we know now that meat doesn't turn into flies, so be careful of a rush to judgment.

I agree, people with problems are more likely to post in forums than people with normal working amps.

But still it definitely looks like Fender had (and still has) QC issues with this amp. I tried three different models (one I had ordered and two in a different store) and all had the same issues of excessive noise and hum. So, if you have a quiet one, count yourself lucky. 8)

On the topic of extension jacks/speakers:
I decided to order a replacement speaker instead of the tranny with multiple impedance taps for my PRRI. (The price was almost the same.) I think the Princeton will also handle the mismatch of adding a 8 Ohm extension cab, like the SS22. It will probably distort a little earlier, but enough headroom has not yet been a problem for me. (I played it live in a 300 people venue with a loud drummer next to me last week. and that is good enough for me. It would just have been nice to have a second speaker too have a little fuller sound onstage.)

So, I ordered the WGS Veteran 10, it is probably not too different from the stock Jensen, just is a tad more efficient and supposed to be an "upgrade to a C10Q". (The G10C they have would have been interesting, it is a lot more efficient, but those were not in stock, and to be honest, I like having an inefficent speaker most of the time. I can get to the sweet spot without being very loud.)

So when my extension cabinet arrives, I will have a BFDR (12" ceramic) and a PRRI (new 10" ceramic) plus an 1x12 ext cab with an Alnico. So I think, with the possible combinations (and I could always get a 1x10 extension cab) I will be able to have a great and portable setup for all kinds of settings and venues, and especially for recording. (The Deluxe i.e. also sounds great with the inefficient C10R of the Princeton. Vice versa, the Princeton rocks with the WGS G12C in the Deluxe!) Also, I can't wait to break in the Alnico with the Deluxe. :)

Glad to hear someone got an answer about the external speaker jack. I've been thinking about adding another 12 or maybe a 15. I guess I'm one of the few happy/lucky SS22 owner's. I bought mine about 5 months ago and have been very happy with it. I have not had any of the noise or reverb issues that I have heard about. But, I tried mine at a local store (not some big box retailer) and bought the one that I tried in the store. The only problem I have had is a bad power tube (which of course was good enough to last more than 90 days). I love the clean channel! I think it takes pedals great and breaks up just enough when cranked. I also like the fat boost when playing my tele, but off when using humbuckers. I would agree that the stock speaker is a little farty on the lows.

My only complaint is that I thought I would like the the Burn channnel better. I played around with it in the store before buyng, and thought there would be some good tones in there, but I haven't yet been able to dial in anything that is usable to me yet. Plus, I think the burn is extremely unresponsive to touch, to dialing back on the guitar volume, or my boost pedal (mxr micro amp). I like the burn a little better with humbuckers (Gibson 57s) than with my Am. Std tele, but still not enough to use it regurlarly. In retrospect, I think the 65 DRRI might have been better for me.
