Some questions about my hot Rod deluxe. First, what would be a good set of preamp tubes to replace my old ones. I think the stock tubes are three GT12AX7A. Want to keep my tubes pretty much stock. I replace the 6L6 last year with GT. I see that groove tube sell a kit, Called SAG-FST fenders soft touch preamp tube change kit. Two preamp tubes are GT12AX7C and one preamp to in the kit is GTAT7 phase inverter. Is this kit designed to work with my hot Rod deluxe.? Would I get a warmer sound and tone using this kit? Or should I just replaced the preamp tubes with the stock three GT12AX7A. I'm also having a problem with the amplifier since it was new, that when you're playing on the clean channel it will switch to the dirty channel on its own, when the foot switches plugged in. Also when I switched the amplifier off about 60 seconds later there is a popping sound that comes out of the AMP. I wrote Fender but I never received a reply.

You can play with your preamp tubes all you want. You don't need to bias preamp tubes and you'll have some fun finding new tones. You don't need a GT or Eurotube kit and they all don't need to be 12AX7 preamp tubes. You can really change how the gain sounds. Try a 12AT7, ECC83S. A 5751 will drop the gain a little. Try different manufacturers too. Try JJ, Electro Harmonix, Sovtek, etc. Do a little research. Tube Depot has a lot of useful information on their site too. Eurotubes has biasing videos if you ever want to play with your power tubes. One of my favorites is the NOS JAN Phillips 5771. Mix them up and experiment.

Have fun and experiment. My Egnater has a combination of JJs' JAN Phillips and EH. I like it and it changed the character slightly of my amp to make it mine, not what any other person or tube manufacturer says it should be. It's the way I like it. Tubes and tone are subjective and personal. What works for me may not work for you.

The channel switching is more than likely the 5 watt power resistors.
This site is a great source of information

JJ's.

They darkened up the HRDv nicely - I found the GT stock tubes had the amp ridiculously bright sounding. Also they changed the character of the drive channel to where it was very nice.
