This brings up a question of telling glass from plastic: I've got stock Fender red jewels from late 60s amps and a new Fender blue jewel from my DRRI.
I've also got purple, amber, clear, white and violet. All the above jewels give a dull "thunk" when tapped with a screwdriver blade. I assume they are all plastic.

I've got one green jewel that gives a bright "tink" when tapped and I assume it is glass.

I'm told Fender stock jewels are glass and more expensive but mine from the 60s and 2010 seem to be plastic.

Any thoughts on this?

Easy way to check......

Hold the jewel over a lit Zippo.

If it's plastic you'll know most skosh.

I use the "Tink" test on mine too.

the glass ones sound way different.

This may sound weird but I tap it on my front tooth (very lightly) and then I can tell without a doubt if its plastic or glass.

I'll see if I can get a good picture of a few of my vintage glass jewels in action.

Thanks!

I just ordered cool white and blue LED replacements for a #47 bulb.
I got the blue to reinforce my blue jewel and a cool white to put behind all the others.

blues bondsman,

I got them at www.superbrightleds.com I installed one today, a bright white. It looks great and is much brighter than the incandescent #47 bulb. I also got a blue one which is a very pleasant blue. If you like to change jewel colors the white is the way to go.

Now for the bad news :( The bulb holder in my DRRI is a flimsy piece of metal that moved around while I was trying to insert the bulb. I finally had to pull the amp chassis to get the LED in.... BUT...it will likely never burn out and need replacing.

"BUT...it will likely never burn out and need replacing."

Yeah?

Well here's the really bad news......

None of those LEDs is rated for 6.3 volts (which is what the heater tap off of the P/S tranny is supplying). I supposed you'll get a few months' use out of them before they burn up. That's why the LED appears so much brighter than the incandescent type 47 bulb.

We shall see what happens. The site states the LEDs have built-in current limiting resistors. Or one might calculate a resistor value to drop the voltage from 6.3 to 6 volts.

Re 6.3 volts: Yeah. I was just informed by superbrightled.com that 6.3 volts should be OK. The LEDs for the #47 bulbs have limiting resistors. Shine on you crazy diamond. :)

( I also used one for a night light last night, on about 8.2 volts, and it didn't blow)

Smooth.

I may look into these myself now that I know they'll be "simpatico" with the 6.3 volt heater voltage.

Rawk on!
