 I just purchased a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Used. I'm no Amp Doctor but I do understand the basics. Being a PC tehc and network admin for a number of years electronics do not intimidate me.
So I got this Amp and first off I noticed that it do have a microphonic Pre Amp tube. I replaced them all two matched Sovtek 6L6 tubes (Matched) and replaced all the Pre amp tubes all mricophonic tubes fixed. When I was able to push the amp to higher levels I would check out the Clean channel, then over to the drive, then more drive, Then I would get a real high pitched evil sounding feed back every time I played a guitar through for about 10 Sec and then nothing on any of the channels. out put on all channels just die. I turn the amp and standby off and you get a Sec of life as the amp powers down.
Any one know where I should start looking? I heard that this was a common issue. Maybe some one could get me to the thread that talks about this issue?
Thank all!

Hi morbe,

I'm a 98 HRDlx owner myself. Does this noise happen only when you use the drive channel, or only when you use it at higher volumes? It still sounds like you might have a tube problem. The amp should be turned off before exchanging tubes, wait for tubes to cool before removing they can be hot. First try moving the preamp tube in position V1 (looking at back of amp farthest away from the 6L6 output tubes), exchange it with the tube in position V2 (next position to the left of V1). If the noise goes away, or gets better, then the tube that was in V1 (now in V2), is suspect. It could also be an output tube (6L6), next try putting the original output tubes back in and check for the noise. Make sure that all tubes are pushed in all the way and seated firmly and don't feel loose in the socket. Maybe even watch the tubes as you play and describe the color of the glow from the output tubes. All of the tubes, preamp and output should have an orange glow, indicating that the filament is good.

The next thing to check (maybe the first), would be the solder joints on the tube socket boards. This will involve removing the back panel of the amp. Are you handy with a soldering iron? Be aware that the capacitors in the amp can still have a charge, even when the amp is off, and they will need to be discharged before working/soldering in the amp. The high voltages inside the amp are lethal (400+ volts), you have to use caution (not like a PC with low voltages).

Somethings to check, just a couple of places to start, let me know what you find, if anything. :)

Check this out, it will probably really help.
http://www.justinholton.com/hotrod/5Wresistors.html

I suspect the 5 watt resistors too. Just a hunch. They can also cause random channel switching.

Here's the whole site.

http://www.justinholton.com/hotrod/

Probably one of the most valuable sites for someone who owns a HRD amp prior to the III series.

These amps are a crap shoot. The more you play and especially if you gig will reveal all its flaws. I'm not looking for an argument, I'm not telling anyone their amp is crappy, I'm just stating facts and trying to help. As shimmilou stated the tube socket joints should be inspected. After the tubes cool, watch the board and gently wiggle each tube and look for cracks in the solder joints. If you do a search of my posts, you'll find many of the potential problems/flaws with the HRDlx and then some. Mine was a nightmare and I had way more than my fair share of problems with my HRDlx. People get mad when I talk about them but if it helps someone, I don't care.

I think its fixed thanks all! I got it used from a store and the owner sent it to have it repaired. Basically the tech ( who specializes in only Tube amp) suggested a 12au7 and a 12ay7 tube for the first who preamp tube to bring the edge down a bit. He also re biased the power tubes and reinforced every solder joint on the entire amp, tube sockets and all. So fa so good! Thanks every one.

A 12au7 worked great for me too in V1 of the HRDx I used to own! Good choice!

Two months later and this HRD is still playing strong! I do however baby it and it and the volume level really never needs to go past 5 playing in a 3 piece blues band. I use the Gain every now and then, but I never use the more gain.

That rocks morbe, both literally and figuratively! :D Do the lower gain tubes help the drive channel to sound better than before? I tried a 12AT7 in V2 on mine, and although the drive channel was a little better, the clean channel suffered a little to me. Maybe I should try one in V1 and V2. :?:

Well the clean is great. I use it mainly becuase I play blues Even the clean can get break up just ever so slightly, Depending on the song I'm playing I will switch to the gain if I need more bite. But I believe the More Gain is just useless. You can maybe get by with playing harder rock with it but its really just the Gain channel just slightly louder. I dont have a volume pedal so its worthless to me. I also play a MIM Stratocaster SSS setup played with the bridge pickup only. It sounds raw enough for me. Bottom line I used to turn my nose to fender products becuase before I took a break from playing I played a Les Paul Copy though a Mesa 50 watt combo amp. Then got rid of the Mesa. I just started playing again same Same Les paul copy but through a Line 6 Spider 3. then started missing that tube sound. Well the only one I could afford was this Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Im glad I did becuase it forced me to purchase a Stratocaster. Now the fender amp and guitar are my mane rig. I will never doubt Fender again. "I Have Seens The Light AND IT IS GOOD!"

Here is my Sexy Beast!!!! Its been pretty faithful ever since. I ran into the guys store to exchange acoustic guitar strings to a lighter set (I have a hairline crack in the bridge :( )
And he asked me when I was going to bring the amp back to have a different set of power tubes put in it!!
I thought he forgot about those, I know I sure did !!
