Which pedals go where? I m relatively new at all this and was told to put pedals thru the effects loop. Which ones go thru this (output on the Hot Rod Deluxe to the input on the first pedal, right?) versus which go between the guitar and the regular amp input? Any advice is appreciated!

I have found effects loops to be tone-robbers......I've never used them.

Some say ... Distortions, Fuzz, etc. should be in front of your amp, and Modulation ( Chorus, Flanger, etc) in the loop... I have my HRD set this way, for me it works and sounds great YMMV. There are no rules on this, just do what you think sounds best. Check out the Boss peddle website, they have some great info on this as well.

+1 with caveat

That is traditional FX wisdom and it does seem to work failry well but I still do it Arjay style with everything up front because I just don't hear a difference separating them. One thing is sure. It definitely is not a good sound to put any extra drive stage gain in the loop. That's gotta be up front. Time based filters only in the loop.

I forgot to ask...so if i put the wah and OD into the front of the amp, and the time based pedals in the loop, where do I put the ISP Declmator Noise Reduction Pedal?

Hi mjrnvc,

I have heard the same thing as bill948, time based effects in the loop, distortions in the input jack. With my HRDlx I have usually used a pedal board or POD with many effects in one, and found that they didn't sound as good in the loop as they did into the input jack, like Retroverbial said. Now I just use the Preamp Out to go to a tuner or another amp input.

I tried a noise gate in a HRDlx's loop with the hope that it would improve the amp's lousy S/N ratio.

It did not.

+1 I found the loop in my HRDlx to be not only noisy but a tone sucker too. I usually never use them. Most of my amps never had a loop.

One trick. If you have a Line 6 POD or other amp simulator, go from guitar to POD to effects loop return. This skips the tone coloration in the amp's preamp circuit. You will hear the difference.

Any noise reduction effect should be the last unit in the chain before it plugs into the input jack. Those kinds of units can be problematic and tricky to adjust. Especially if you don't use much compression, or FX with compression built in. IMO noise reducers are best suited to high gain, high compression, highly filtered, narrow dynamic range setups such as those commonly used by shredders and glammers.

Reverb and delay in the loop, distortions, wah pedals, compressors, boosters and sustainer before the amp. Everything else can be placed wherever you like.

However, if you have a fender amp, the reverb is likely to be amazing, and delay you can get away with infront of the amp.

The reason reverb HAS to be put after the preamp is because, if the reverb is fed threw a distortion pedal or an overdriven preamp (Even just a little bit) will sound catastrophic. However if you play nothing but clean, or use pedal distortion, place it infront of your amp, but last in the chain and reverb will be all good.

As for everything else, place to your hearts content but if you can avoid effect loops, do it.
