Randall makes a great solid state 200 watt head for metal players. The clean channel is too sterile for blues or classic rock but the dirty channel rocks. It should be within your budget constraints or close to it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Some of the solid state Marshalls-even the combos-can really kick out the metal raunch. If you're lucky enough you may even find a used JCM 800 or 900 tube amp in your price range that can be a quite good metal amp-especially the 900s.

i would look for an old peavey bandit65 with a good boss pedal. i used that setup for yrs.
peavey is/was a good solid bet for metal back in the 80's. you can beat these amps to death and w/o fail they will be there for you next time you hit the "ON" switch.
i still have 3 or 4 of them myself. just cant let them go.
believe it or not, crate made some good sounding budget metal amps.
i used one for a while also.
i think Randell was mentioned above. Randell SS amps were used by several big name
guys for metal back in the 80's. if i had my choice of the 3, peavey every time.

The electro-harmonix Metal Muff pedal was a pleasant surprise. Play it through a clean amp and you will have a true metal sound. My collection of amps has ranged through a lot of types, and the Metal Muff was able to compete with the metal amps. So, get the pedal and keep saving your money until you can buy the metal amp of your dreams.
