There are other amps that do metal and punk or progressive better than Fender and VOX. If you can afford it check out a MESA, they got drive, power and can do effects. Plus, MESA can do decent clean and blues if needed.

mesa is WAY out of his budget.

for £400 (which doesent go far in this little land) Anything tube your going to struggle with.

Funnily enough im selling a marshall JCM2000 TSL 2x12 combo which would be right up your street for £400...

You dont live in, or near manchester do you?

i live in cardiff, i'll check out the amp on u tube etc, nice one

The amp is currently sat in a music shop in a town near blackburn (Which is near manchester). If you'd like to have a go i'll throw you an address, and the guy who owns the shop will be more than happy for you to try it out.

No Vox AC30's for under $400 ... They start at $1000 ... Your comparison
is funny .. a killer and expensive tube AMP vs. a whatever it is...

Wait for the Fender Mustang III, IV and V's to come out ... there all under $400 with all the watts you're seeking and lots of punky sounds. Or grab a Vox VT50 ..there below $400 .. but I'd wait for the Mustang since they start at 100w for the III 1x12... Next up ..150w IV 2x12 (75w a side) and the V Head will be 150w ...all RMS.

What about an Orange amp? They make amps of all sizes and all price ranges.
There's also Randall.

does anyone have any opinions on blackstar amps

I have a Blackstar HT-5 Mini Half Stack and it is a fabulous amp. I don't play Metal so I can't give you an honest opinion on that part.

Go try one out.

I say to check out the HOT ROD DELUXE 410, you could score a used onr in your range. Also, checo out PEAVEY's DELTA BLUES 115, I gought one and it is an incredible amp for the price!

Heavy Metal/Prog? Interesting that no one mention the "M" word. Guess that's a no-no on the Fender board.

The "M" word? Would that be Mojave? :) I've heard that the Mojave Coyote has an awsome Plexi tone at low power.
