I have just purchased a Fender Pro Jr (the newest Mk 3 version).

The first unit gave out a very loud hum (mains?) even with the volume turned to zero, and no guitar plugged in. Compared to my guitar tutor's Pro Jr Mk 2 it was really loud, so I returned the unit.

The second unit arrvied today, still the same hum, though not as loud, also one of the EL84 power tubes red-plated straight away, volume was at ~2, was only testing it out for ~5mins.

So - I've heard these things are noisy, but is it a Mk 3 issue? My guitar tutor's unmodified, ~2 yo Mk 2 is much better??

Needless to say I'm really diappointed, anyone had similar issues? Is it likely a re-valve with some better valves might cure the problem? Anyone have any info on the Mk3 vs Mk2? - As far as I can see it is cosmetic changes only.

Hi jimbojr,

Less noise was supposed to be one of the improvements to the PJr, but they all will have some hum, that's normal. The previous PJrs were the noisiest of the HRd amps to begin with. And if the tube was red plating, new ones might also. I would take it back, but this time try it in the store first, checking the noise and the output tubes. Sometimes the type of preamp tube in V1 will affect the amount of hum somewhat also. Compare your instructors V1 tube to the new ones, consider that they may be relabled, so look at the original markings, ie Sovtek 12AX7WA, or 12AX7WC, when you compare.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
