Let's talk about this subject. I'll open the discussion with a few definitions we might find handy.(pardon my computer skill of not making a list) 1) point to point= components and wires connected to sockets, pots, small tag strip, etc. 2) eyelet board= eyelets attached to firber, vulcanized, glass laminate, etc. 3) turret board= same as above board, but with turret terminals. 4) rail construction= the use of rails for component terminals. 5) PCB= etched boards of glass, fiber, epoxy, etc. IMO all these methods work. But which, in our opinons, work best for us ? For myself, I like a solid non-conductive eyelet board, suspended up off the chassis. Do I have this in my amps ? Heck no ! I've got the rolling boards from the 60's, sandwiched against another insullating board(of dubious conductive properties). And yeah, I have pulled them apart and removed those beautiful stalagtites of solder that inevitably form, when I'm to lazy to use the solder sucker or desolder braid. Any way, let's hear the real deal from you folks ! Art

I'm down with whatever works, Art.

Most of my stuff is vintage of course (eyelet boards) but I also own two blackface re-issues (PCB) and one transistorized model (PCB, op-amps, CMOS chips, etc). They all do their jobs well but I favor Leo's original methods as they lend themselves to easy troubleshooting, repair, and (on rare occasions) modding. Were I to attempt a new-build clone I'd prefer the modern PCB for ease of assembly but most custom builders who make at profit at such endeavors favor either eyelet or turret board construction to maintain some semblance of fidelity to the original prototype.

Like I mentioned, whatever works.

All things considered, including ease of build and ease of access for repairs, I would rate them in the order of 3, 2, 4, 1, 5.

Although the original way of doing it (1) is appealing, it could get crowded and difficult for access to the parts underneath, like this one I'm working on now. And 5 just makes everything more difficult for everyone except for the ease of mass producing. So, turret board would be my first choice. :)

Which works best for me? Well since I'm not in the business of repairing amps :( which makes me think this thread does not apply to me :( , I think I will choose....... whichever sounds best. Regardless of whether it's turret, eyelet, rails, pcb, etc. if it's assembled with quality components and it sounds good, then it is good  But I can definatley relate to the tech's point of view regarding the servicing and maintaining of said items.
