I believe the Gold and Blue are still made in the UK, I'll have to take a look at mine to confirm, I know the V30 says made in China on it...

The Celestion Blue and Gold are make in the UK. I've got a Blue in my DRRI and it sounds great.

Indeed......they're right up there with the Tone Tubbys!

I've got an old pair of Ipwitch-made V-30s that I've beat like a rented mule and they still sound nasty/nice. But the V30 isn't all that hot for that vintage, compressed, alnico blues tone. They're really at their best when used as multiples in a bass-reflex cab a la 1960A (preferably mated with an AB165 Bassman).

Mama-mia...
I just checked the price of the Gold on a couple of web sites...must be made out of Gold!!
Golds are rated @ 50W.
Though the Blues are rated at 15W...

Here's the question...when buying a speaker do you buy one based on how many watts the Amp will put out and maybe add some headroom??

For instance, I have my DRRI. 22W. Could I get by with the Blue or should I get the Gold?
Not planning on doing anything right now...just thinking ahead. :D

I would never have considered buying a 15 watt speaker for near $300 but my DRRI came with it on clearance for less than the price of a regular black DRRI. (Mine is one of a run of electric blue DRRIs). It is a very nice sounding speaker, and efficient. I'm told it gets better with break in. It's louder than my Weber California 12 ceramic.

If the Gold can handle a 60 watt amp at moderate vol I may get one for my Carvin.

tyronne, the Blue will handle the 22 watt DRRI. I'm jammin away with mine.

On my new DRRI I normally turn standby "on" before shutting the amp off. Is this the proper procedure or do you just power it down without first placing it into standby?

If you really like the Golds, call Dave at avatarspeakers.com. Their prices for raw Celestions are very good. I think their price for a new UK Gold is 259.

Update on the 5AR4
My JJ Rectifier tube arrived today, man what a difference ! no more buzz and maybe I'm crazy but it sounds warmer to me.
I do believe the original GT/Ruby was faulty in this DRRI, The guy I bought it from had a package of slow blow fuses in the back of the cab when i got it.
I'm guessing there was a problem with the original.

Still thinking about a weber 12A150 alnico 50 watt

Putting webbers in the bassman RI Made a huge leap forward in tone, I'm betting it will do the same for a DRRI

Dr Decibel just informed me that the 50 watt Gold should be just fine in my 60 watt Carvin unless I turn it up all the way, which won't happen. For the last 26 years I've played it on 3 or maybe 4. :)

The upgrade in overall sound with just the change of the rectifier tube has got me just plain old giddy right now.

I know tone isn't cheap, but spending those kinda bucks without knowing I'll absolutely love the sound, not gonna do it !!!

It's sometimes a crap-shoot, no doubt about that. And speakers -- like pickups -- are terribly subjective and also dependent upon other variables that can either conspire to work towards your objective or against it.
