I tried the Tung-Sols 6v6 and really liked 'em! I now have NOS RCAs and I'm very happy. I also tried a set of JJ 6v6 and found 'em too harsh IMO.

+1

I put matched pairs of NOS grayplate GE's into my Spankmaster and my original '65 Princeton Reverb. Sonically they're very similar to vintage JAN Tung-Sols. The PR has a nice Amperex Bugle Boy GZ34 and I have a new-production JJ rectifier in the SM. Both amps have a mix of mil-spec NOS pre-amp tubes.

I agree with folks here that the DRRI is a very good amp. And sounds quite a bit like the original BF 1960's DR. A friend bought one about 10 years ago. I modded it fr him. It got a Weber 12A150A and some better tubes (Mullard GZ34 and RCA gray glass 6V6GT).

One other thing I did do for this friend, who was going to use his new DRRI on regular basis---was I replaced the power supply filter caps under the hood. 20mfd/500VDC Sprague Atoms will fit under the hood. I used shrink insulation and covered the inside of cap's cover with electrician's tape just to be sure of no shorts.

Also, replaced the 100mfd/100 VDC 'lytic in the BIAS POWER SUPPLY with a comparable Atom. The 'lytics that came OEM with this particular amp at the time (early 2000's) seemed to be some off-brand Chinese stuff. I was told by another amp tech that these Chinese lytic cap companies are notorious for OVER-rating the true voltage capability of their products. That is a 500VDC rated Chinese cap may actually start breaking down at 400-450 VDC (or less).

Anyhow, he's still using that same amp. Same tubes. The only thing he'll let me do is check the bias. He doesn't want me to "accidentally" change its "mojo."

Very damn reliable tone monster.

I got his 1990's Peavey Classic 30 & 1961 Ampeg Jet as "payment" to upgrade te DRRI. And he's happy. BTW... that Jet is a crazy-@ss amp. What a tone those 7591 put out. Good luck with your amp!

Before I forget again, the most important mojo inducing mod.

I installed a vintage real glass dark green amp jewel, it must be non faceted and have the deep swampy green glow for it to add its Mojo.

I also found a moon yellow one too (SPOOKY) !!!

I got back into playing again about seven years ago. Played a number of different amps in the $4-500 dollar or so price range. I kept changing amps because each one lacked a good clean sound and failed to meet other needs, one way or another. About three years ago I played through a DRRI at GC, instantly fell in love with the sound- it was like the angels singing, but just a bit out of my price range.

To make a long story short I finally bought the DRRI about fifteen months ago, and kept the box it came in just in case I wanted to take it back, trade it in, etc., as I've done so often with other amps. Last week, I finally threw the box away, because I will NEVER sell this amp, and will only buy another if anything was to happen to it. I don't gig, but do take it to friends homes to play on occasion. But it just sounds marvelous. With the two channels, it's capable of many different tones, not to mention the reverb and tremolo. I've never had a moments trouble with it, it takes pedals nicely, and just sings like a diva. When I think of all the money I wasted over the years buying this amp, then that amp, I should have just bought this amp and been done with it. It's light in comparison to most professional quality amps, loud as Armageddon, and really a fine tool for crafting good expressive guitar lines. Furthermore, mine is strictly stock, tubes, the whole she-bang.

Now all I need is a tele...

Arjay, re: JJ versus FP (Mallory-style, reissued from AES) cap cans. I've used both, but find that the JJ (on the whole) seem a bit quieter. Of course, one may need to use real Czech-made ear plugs to truly hear the difference. :)

Anyone do a head-to head test in terms of reliability and performance between these two? I've asked on hi-fi boads, and they seem to like the JJ better. I like the FP cans because you don't need cramp adapter. They look much more OEM.

Thanks, for any input.

Correct, B-man.

They look better and they're a drop-in fit. A fifteen-minute job at most. The FP can is a skosh shorter than OEM though (a small sacrifice in authenticity but worth it IMO).

That's what's in my '65 Princeton Reverb and what awaits my '68 Bronco. The Princeton is as quiet as a church mouse.

Be certain to discharge yours before proceeding.

Here is a bit of a wierd deal, we painted the part of my house where my studio is, So stuff got moved all over, Lately i'm getting wierd overtones and so i start the usual pickup height checks ect.....

Well to make a long story short, The amp (DRRI) had been placed very close to the wall, like six inches from it and i never gave it a thought, tonight for some reason I noticed it and pulled it like another foot from the wall.

I don't need to tell you this but, it fixed the problem.

Open back cabs need a bit of breathing room to bloom !!!

I bought a new Super Reverb in the late 60s and traded it for a Twin with JBLs in 1970. I also bought a '66 Deluxe Reverb for an obscenely low price some years ago and sold it for about 7 times what I gave.

That was my total Fender amp experience until I got a DRRI in May. I've always wanted a blue "Tolex" amp and when I discovered Fender had issued a limited run of blue DRRIs a year earlier I found one on clearance at less that the going price for the black "Tolex" model. Plus mine came with the fabled Celestion Blue speaker.

I've added reverb to the Normal channel via the Fritz Mod and have gigged with it twice, both times unmiked with a classic rock band. It is using NOS RCA grey glass 6V6s and the tubes (unmatched) are running 15 and 18 mA.

As far as I can remember I got no instructions with my new SR or Twin and never knew the inputs had a 6 Db difference till I got the DRRI.

The DDRI is possibly the last amp I'll buy. My main amp for the last 24 years has been my Carvin 1X12 X-Amp. I can use them both on stage with my Morley ABC box.

In addition to the blue jewel I've got red, purple, green, amber and clear. The MOJO award goes to the blue but I can change it out every set if I want to... :D

When I was shopping for my Jazzmaster a couple of years ago I happened to try it out on a DRRI at the store. It was perfect! The jazz tones coming out of this setup were as good as any I've heard. I couldn't justify buying the amp though, as I already had a PRRI and TRRI. But a couple of months later I was at a GC and they were having a sale. I couldn't resist, so I bought it. I love these amps. So now my PRRI is my bedroom amp, the DRRI is my living room and jamming amp, and the TRRI is out to pasture for now. Blackface is beautiful baby!

Does anyone build a DRRI case that will accommodate a 15? I have a standard Deluxe Reverb that I have plugged into a Weber cabinet with a Weber California Ceramic Fifteen in it, and I love the sweeter top end. I'm no wood worker, so I'd like to find a cabinet that would fit the DR head and the 15.
