I have a Princeton 65 (NOT the DSP or reverb). It is a very nice amp, great sound, very loud. Actually, the volume is a problem, it is very hard to get a practice level as the volume and tone completely drop off below a 2 and at 2 it is louder than a respectable practice volume. Also, it has that harsh responsiveness that is stereotypical to Solid State amps.

I wanted two small tube amps to run stereo from my TC Electronic Chorus that would:
- Have a volume range from practice to small gig.
- Have a good tonal response at practice volumes.
- Have a timbre despite small speakers (ie 10" on the XD).
- Have a tube amp response (tonally with mild compression).

Would I get this from the Super Champ XD? I suspect that two 15watt tube amps would be a comparable volume to a single 65watt solid state. I also feel like you don't get the benefit of a tube amp unless you push them a little, so a lower wattage may reach that point at a respectable volume for practice.

Would this be a smart exchange? Would the XD meet my needs? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jon

I would go with two Jet City amps before the SCXD.

Way better sounding amp. I tried them side by side. I like the Jet City YMMV. Mike Soldano designs them.

Yeah he does. He seemed to put some thought into them and the build quality seems quite a bit better than the SCXD. The XD is a hybrid DSP amp and not really of the same Champ lineage.

None of the "vintage-molested" models bear much in common with their namesakes.

FINO's all!

So is that a vote for Jet City of SCXD or a vote for P65 (solid state) over SCXD?

Jet City. Like I said, Mike Soldano is a legendary boutique amp designer. Andy Marshall (No affiliation with Marshall amps) worked with VHT he also works with Mike. The amps are serious bang for the buck amps. No DSP nonsense messing with the signal. Jet City Amps are supposedly an all tube signal path. I haven't seen the schematic.

I would at least try one to see if it fits your needs.

Yea... they look like amazing amps, I've only heard great things. A little pricier than you can get a SCXD, but probably worth it. The only problem with that, since the price difference isn't HUGE, is that I really want to run stereo from my TC Electronic Chorus into two amps, doubling the price difference.

I personally don't understand the DSP stuff. I think it is the flood of people with "bad" musical taste in the market. Those DSP voices seem to make all guitars sound the same, like most digital effects. I would only use the clean channel (1). On the note, I don't know/understand the schematics of the SCXD and hope that the digital side does not impact my clean sound. If so, I might need to see how to disable that if possible and try to pull as much tone as possible from the 3 tubes.

The whole DSP hybrid design impacts your tone in general. For me, It wasn't in a good way. I was hoping the VM series would have been different. It wasn't. The effects are in the signal path molesting the pure tube tone. It just isn't there in the tonal sense like the original Champs Super champs and Broncos. Personally, I'd wait and save a little more money and not jump the gun so to speak. Just my opinion. MF has the 20 watt jet on sale for the same price as the SCXD. The Jet City amp has a 12" speaker too.

I guy in one of the bands I play in brings a SCXD to rehearsal and it drives me nuts. When he uses some of the DSP effects, it's horrible, nasally, cheap sounding and has no depth. It just depends on what you like and what you're after.

The Egnater Rebel 20 is a lot more versatile. Watts control, Tube Mix, Tight and Bright switches, but the Jet City costs a bit less and is also a well built great sounding amp. The Rebel is a bit more money too. If cost were a factor, I'd go with the Jet City. The Jet City is even less than the Tweaker, but then again, The Tweaker is a bit more versatile and yes all the switches do stuff.

That's a good deal. The 2x12 cabs go for around $450. The center panel in the cab is removable to convert it to a semi open back cabinet. The Rebel sounds really sweet through the Tourmaster cabs too.
