what would be the best small gig worthy amp, but retain clean tones at small venue volumes (with a drummer)

I was thinking the Blues Jr with 12" speaker but think the 15 watts might not cut it and stay clean also.

need a portable amp

thanks

Deluxe Reverb re-issue.

No doubt about it.

I use my deluxe reverb. It has much better tone and no problem keeping up with a drummer. In smaller places I sometimes use input 2.

DRRI would be about my first choice for a portable amp although you could look into the Marshall Class 5 and Haze or some of the VT series Vox amps.

Yep agree with the choices of a DRRI at 22watts, or a Princeton Reverb at 15 watts and fewer features for a bit less.

Personal choice would be the DRRI.

65 deluxe Reverb RI

No brainer there !!!

O.k. so a few of us have a thing for the DRRI, all I can say is plug and see for yourself.

Do a little tube tweaking and you'll have a botique quality tone at half the price.

HRD III - great cleans and loads of headroom! Now they ship with a decent Celestion speaker as well.

A 40 watt tube amp wouldnt be my choice of a SMALL GIG amp.I have had 2 of them and know how loud these are.

They've remedied the volume taper on the newer model so it CAN be played at lower volumes - especially when plugging into input no. 2. It certainly could be used for small gigs no problem.

seems like the HRD is too close to my deville 212, in portability,
so I wanted to go just a touch smaller, but without too much break up

the deville 212 is a little hard on the back for weekend gigs.

The clean tone from a HRD even with a decent speaker, is nothing near the classic Fender sparkely clean tone of a black or silver face.

Personal preference, really all depends on what you are looking for.

^I actually disagree with this - I've played the HRD III back to back with a 65 RI DRRI and didn't find the cleans on the DRRI to be any "better" than the HRDs - just different. The HRDs cleans sound bigger and bassier to me - the DRRI more vintage (obviously). I went HRD for several reasons including that I don't particularly like reverb or trem that much in an amp. YMMV of course.

Personal preferance, all depends what you are looking for. Amen brother.

The "difference" can best be quantified thus:

The DRRI is a Fender amp. Its AB763 circuit was designed and engineered by Leo himself and even the latest re-issue permutation adheres to the original layout save for some safety upgrades that have become standard in all modern gear.

The HRD is an FMIC amp. Fender in name only.
