I've just purchased my first all-tube amp (SR reissue) and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. What I would like is a sort-of a tube amp primer or book or faq of some sort to answer all of my super-uneducated questions. If you guys could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

I'll throw out some of the basics just so you guys have an idea:

Am I shortening the life of my tubes if I just leave the amp on all day and use standby?

What are the different type of tubes/tube manufacturers and why should I use one over the other?

How long should a typical set of tubes last?

What pedals typically are the most effective with tube amps and why?

What's the history of the super reverb?

etc...

Sorry for being a newb but we all start somewhere. Thanks in advance.

Why leave the amp on standby all day? It makes no sense. I've been playing tube amps for over 40 years so here's my 2 cents worth.. Use the standby on gigs or when you practice. Put it in standby when you first power it up and before you shut down and in between when you need a break.

Tubes are funny things. Some last years and years, some are bad when you put them in.
Correct bias is very important. If it's biased too hot you'll kill your tubes pretty quick. Too cold and the amp will sound sterile in other words like garbage but the tubes will last a really long time.

Pedals are really subjective. Only your ears can tell. It depends on the music you play and the guitar you're using. I don't use them as much as I used to. I love just cranking a lower wattage tube amp. Tube Screamers are nice, the Electro Harmonix English Muffin is great too and uses tubes in the pedal. It's all up to you.

Heat is a bad thing for printed circuit boards and that's what's in most of the reissues. Turn the amp off when you don't need it for a while.
