So I finally bought a Fender DRRI...used. It was shipped to me and just arrived. So with lots of anticipation I opened the box. Looks like the original Fender box and sticker says on it October 22 2010. So it's fairly new! Looks it too!

So I rushed to plug it in and I pull out the foot switch and see 2 thin springs attached to each other in the middle. They seem to be attached to the speaker's magnet...strange!

So I plug in the footswitch plug in my guitar power up the DRRI. Ahhh, what a nice sound! This is great!!! :D I punch the tremlo swutch and lo and behold "Tremlo"! I can vary it and sounds nice!! OK lets try "REVERB"...no difference in sound. Hmmm, what's going on here says I??? Look in the back to make sure all is well and what do I see? Another set of 2 thin springs connected in the middle. Oh-oh! I think I found my REVERB problem.

So I ask the "Learned Forum Members", what the heck is this and did I just buy a Piece of junk? Do these springs come apart that easy in transit? Is it easy enough to put this back together? Or should I get my money back?

I was so looking forward to this day too...

With the costs involved in shipping it back, it would probably be cheaper to purchase a new reverb tank. I think they go for about $25-$30 and they are very easy to replace. You could probable even file a claim with the shipping company to cover the cost. As long as the amp is in perfect working condition, In this case, I personaly wouldn't send it back for a refund. Specially if it's as new as you say it is. I'd file a claim and get a new tank. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Any "dynamic event" significant enough to shake the springs out of a reverb tank while in transit would likely be able to cause other more serious harm, even though such damage might not be readily apparent now.

I would notify the seller immediately and make arrangements to return the amp, either for replacement or a refund. With such a sizeable investment involved, there is no way I would keep it under any circumstances.

Reverb springs that jump out of the tank, which is itself encased in a reverb tank bag?? How used was it? Did you purchase it from one of the mail-orders that sell blems? If so, in which category of "blem" was it, and was there a warranty on it?

I doubt that shipping would be at fault, unless the amp travelled half-way around the globe in no packing of any sort. Heck, I got a couple dozens amps shipped to me from the US and Canada without any such damage. Even guitars shipped in their hard case secured with two pieces of tape as the only packing arrived damage-free!

Just wanted to update this thread.

I purchased this "used" - "level 1 rated" amp from Musician's Friend at one of the best prices for a used DRRI I had seen. Mid $700 . I called them up this morning and explained to customer service what I had found...the 2 sets of Reverb Springs inside the back of the amp, and what I found last evening in that after about 5 minutes, the amp started "howling" even with the volume turned down to "1".

Gentleman there apologized and said I must feel very dissapointed. I agreed. He said that he would contact UPS and have them pick up the unit and ship it back them, no charge. Said it would take a few days for shipping and about a day for processing and they would ship me out a another one. I reminded him that this one was "used" and I didn't think they had any other "used" ones by looking on their website. He asked me to hang on for a few seconds while he checked...about a minute later he told me that he had authorization to send me a "new" DRRI at the price I paid for the "used" one!
I had to have him repeat that twice! I couldn't believe it. He said MF valued my business and that this "occasionally" happens in shipping and they wanted to make sure I was happy. I told him I was more than happy with their level of service and how they are taking care of me.

So I saved 25% off of the street price of a brand new DRRI!

From what I could determine, someone at MF packaged the amp upside down in the Fender Box. The "Fender" packaging has arrows on it indicating which way is up. The amp was upside down during shipment to me which explains why the springs must have found their way into the back of the cab. Also the footswitch was lodged between the electrical chassis and the cone of the speaker. Who knows what that footswitch may have done bouncing off the tubes and speaker cone!!! Probably the cause of the "howling".

So I just wanted to give a nod to Musician's Friend in how well they handled this. I certainly will continue to do business with them in the future.

You would think some of this kind of customer service would rub off on Guitar Center... Great story with a happy ending!

Congrats! :D

Indeed, the upside-down packing, with a free-flying footswitch for added excitement, would do it! I think you wouldn't have scored a better price on the Bay. Plus you got excellent customer service backing up your purchase.

Geez, I think I'm jealous, now

Well, just to close this out...the "New" DRRI came in last evening. :D :D

It was supposed to be delivered today but surprisingly showed up a day ahead of schedule!!! :D :D

Here are some pics...

By itself:

Sounds sooooooo nice!

Now I'm just refraining from doing all the mods that I've been reading about in the last few weeks while waiting!

Again, I have to tip my hat to MF for replacing a used amp with a new one and not charging me the difference. Definitely will be doing business with them in the future!

Any suggestions on how to break this beauty in??

Yup...2008 MIM with Dimarzio Area loaded PG + Callahan Trem Block.
My 2nd Strat. First one was an early 70's vintage that was stolen.

Tele is a GC FSR I bought last year around this time. :D

Have had lots of fun with both thru a Line6 for the past couple of years.
Can't imagine how much more I will have with the DRRI !!!
:D

Hey, really nice amp mate!

Resist the urge to mod it, they sound great already and it'll probably start sounding even better with some playing time on the speaker and familiarity with the controls, lots of great sounds already in there, and you have a full 5 years warranty!

Congrats!
