I have a Super Champ XD for practice and recording purposes.

I am thinking of adding an External Speaker Out jack, mainly to feed signal to an Avalon U5 DI for recording; but potentially to run the existing speaker AND an external 1 x 12" cab simultaneously for small live venues.

A) Has anyone out there attempted such a thing?
(adding an External Speaker Out jack)

B) Does anyone know if running an 8ohm, external cab, simultaneously with the 8ohm on-board speaker, (for a total of a 4ohm load), would put too much strain on the standard amp setup?

I realize that I could just unplug the on-board speaker, and re-plug into a 1 x 12" cab - which is what I will USUALLY do.

However, I HOPE to use the extension cab output to go into my Avalon U5 (which does not draw a load from the amp) for recording purposes.

When practicing, I would use either the on-board 10" speaker, OR the 1 x 12" cab; but not both - until or unless I can confirm that the amp can run fairly hot with a 4ohm load without too much damage.

If I CAN run both speakers simultaneously, I might give the setup a try in a live situation...

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hello Spy, I thought of doing basically the same thing but was told by an trusted amp tech the OT [output transformer] is 8 ohm specific and would be damaged. So I went out and bought a Fender Bandmaster Vintage Modified cab w/2 12" Celestions, now the little SCXD has a HUGE sound! Hope this Helps! Regards, G.G.

No can do. 8 ohm load minimum. You could replace the stock 8 ohm speaker in the SCXD with a 16 ohm speaker and then add a 16 ohm external speaker in parallel, or replace the stock 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm one and wire a 4 ohm external speaker in series with it. In either case you are stuck with keeping an 8 ohm load on it. Putting a 16 ohm external speaker in parallel with the stock 8 ohm speaker would give you a 5.3 ohm load, but that might be pushing it for that amp.

+1

Smart move, GG!

That's really the only safe way to add speakers to this amp without any possibility of damage to the output tranny AND preserve whatever term remains of the five-year factory warranty. Any 8-ohm load will do, including a 4 x12 enclosure.

As for adding a line-out or preamp-out jack, that's prolly easily done but would be considered "invasive" for warranty purposes. For use with the Avalon D/I, such a mod should be a balanced XLR output, with the signal limited to 500 mV or less.

Thanks Bluesky.

Assuming I run the 16 ohm internal & 16 ohm external (for an 8 ohm total) in parallel... Any "harm" IF I unplugged the external, and ran just the 16 ohm internal with the amp?

One last factor to consider: I tend NOT to play loud. Just lower volume, lounge/coffee house volumes. Any chance I can run the risk with the existing transformer, OR would a "beefier" transformer help or work at all?
(Just throwing things out there...)

Thanks again to all!

Probably not.

A tranny upgrade is likely not a necessity.

Thanks again! All great info!

Retro: The SCXD already has a line-out, but the upside of the Avalon U5 is that in addition to the usual DI functionality, it can take a 1/4" extension speaker output - straight from the amp, with all of the amp "flavor" - and send DI signal to my recording board. Most times, I also track a speaker/cab mike and play with both at mixdown...

Appreciate the help!

Retro: I'm not sure if I was clear. I wondered about going ahead with the existing 8 ohm, internal speaker; hanging an 8 ohm external from it; but keeping the power/volume down to lower levels, and running the risk of not working the output transformer to death...

For the most part, I would probably only be running internal speaker OR external cab, with the external speaker jack mainly used for recording straight from the speaker out to the Avalon U5.

Sorry, but after re-reading what I wrote, I thought that I was probably unclear...
Regardless, thanks yet again for the great info!

Aah......got it now.

"Dual-tracking" the guitar part(s) should yield some interesting and pleasant effects.

Rawk on!
