Just got offered a Blues Jr. with a Celestion Greenback, JJ Tubes and a road case for $425. Thoughts?

Hi jprzech,

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, if everything works well. You can find good used BJrs for around $300 or more, the upgrade speaker and case would be well worth the difference. :)

LOL! Obviously, we've never met Mr. Way Cool Jr. (love the name, by the way). I'm notorious for being indecisive when it comes to big decisions, especially purchases.

hey im the same way.
here is what i'll do,
i'll question about it, examin it,
research the hell out of it, double guess myself,
recount my money, find something else of interest
real quick while i was researching what i was looking to buy,
research the hell out of that now, get back on track,
start feeling guilty about buying something i really dont NEED,
then get my shiot together and go for it, by the time i get there
its gone. @%#$&! lol
JUST DO IT already.

lol..... or,
i'll have plenty of money and theres not a deal to be had in sight.
i save it.....save it.....save it, and an unexpectedly high bill comes in so i dip in the cash just enough that the deals start showing up and i only have 1/2 of what i need. "SON OF A @$#%$&!

This probably goes without saying, but...

Have you played it? Do you like the way it sounds with the upgrades? Can you try it side by side with a stock BJr? How old is it?

Honestly, when we think in terms of values, ask yourself the question: Is this amp WORTH $425 to me? I mean, you want the best bang for your buck, right? Don't forget that "bang" is part of that equation. If you love the way it sounds, then it's definitely worth the price tag. If you're trying to convince yourself it's worth it for some other reason (resale value, etc.) then it's not worth your time.

One other thing...

In terms of value, it's easy to say it's worth it...after all, we're talking about an amp that is $450-500 brand new, and you're paying less than that for an upgrade. Don't forget though that you can't ascribe value by just taking original value of a used amp PLUS upgrade parts, unless you're getting the stock speaker and tubes. Those are worth something, and could assuage the costs of the amp. If they're not there, I don't value the USED amp minus upgrades at $300, probably closer to $200. Imagine you were buying the amp without any tubes or any speaker. How much would YOU pay for it? Cele greenbacks are $125, depending on the road case it could be valued anywhere $100-300...so along those lines, it's definitely worth it, from a cost standpoint.

That being said, PLAY THE DANG THING! It ain't worth $425 unless YOU think it's worth $425! Who knows, maybe the electronics are going bad, or the speaker doesn't mesh well with the guts. We can tell you if the price is reasonable (it is!) but beyond that you have to decide if it's worth it to you.

I certainly would do that if the the amp wasn't in Long Island with me in Central Connecticut.

However, the guy had 100% eBay feedback and communicated very well with me. To be honest, I'd probably do the exact same mods (speaker and tubes) he did as soon as I got one anyway. The cheapest I've seen are in the $300-325 range, so with a $125 speaker, an $100 road case, and $50 tubes, It seemed more than worth it to me, so I bought it. Hopefully it'll be here by Friday so I can gig with it on Saturday.

+1. I know long distance deals are tough to weather, as I've sold a couple guitars that folks couldn't play beforehand and was on pins and needles that they would like them. Thankfully they did, and I'm positive you'll have the same experience.

Keep us posted, I'd love to know how it's working out for you when it arrives!
