Great job Snowy.
The great images of your build show great attention to detail, and are good indication of the high quality work put into your amp. Oh yea, you won't even miss reverb with that amp. And you may want to find a place to store your overdrive pedals.

Thanks TTSC, what's your favourite way to run your amp?

I'm actually liking the Normal input with Volume set around 5 and Tone set to taste, around 3 on the dial sounds nice with my Strats. But there really is a lot of combinations available with those 3 knobs!

I had a 12AY7 turn up late this afternoon, I won't get to try it until tomorrow but it should be interesting to see how it affects things.

Thanks rjake,

I installed the 12AY7 into V1 today and I think it's a much better match for the amp than the 12AX7. It greatly increases the sweep on the volume knobs between clean to dirty. I don't think the 12AX7 will be going back in V1 anytime soon.

Did some more experimenting and I found some sounds I really like today by plugging into Input 1 on the Bright channel then jumpering from Input 2 on that same channel over to Input 1 on the Normal channel with a patch lead. Then use the Volume on the Normal channel (the one I'm not actually plugged into) to get the volume/tone where I like it and then bring up the Volume on the Bright channel to fatten the sound right up. I love the way the controls interact with each other.

Hi Snowy,

I run my Fender Strat straight to the amp (no effects). At home I plug in bright #2, with volume set at 2.5 to 3 and tone at 7.5. Out playing with others, I plug straight to bright #1 with volume 4 to 5 and tone to 4.

I also plug strat straight in bright #1 and use bright #2 as a line out to another amp for better clarity in tone if more clean overhead is needed. This way I can keep the clear tweed tone and use the line out for more volume and effects such as tremolo.

Anyway Snowy, there is so much to explore with this amp it's too much fun. I tried the 5y3 Sovtec rectifier and it's great for lower volumes at home, but the GZ34 works best when turning up the volume (less sag and bottom flub). I think the guys at Tubedepot realy put some serious thought into this amp when matching the components.

Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the info Snowy,

I'll give the 12AY7 a try, and that jumper thing with 2 channels. Sounds interesting.

Funny you mention the component matching because the flub that a lot of 5e3 owners complain about isn't there and as you just mentioned I think the GZ34 Rectifier has a lot to do with it and possibly also the Output Transformer being upgraded to the meatier one from a Deluxe Reverb.

I've also been reading a lot of 5e3 owners having to run the Tone knob maxed to get clarity and then looking to change cap values (anti flub mods) to address that and actually reduce the bassiness, but I've got to say I'm not getting those symptoms at all in this amp. I'm running the Tone knob on my amp at about number 3 or 4 on the dial with my Strat, maybe in a different room or live in a band setting I'll have to wind it up a bit further but I can't imagine setting it at 12.

And yeah, like you said the old Overdrive pedals might be in for a long holiday!

Hi Snowy,
Sorry I'm late on this, I had a password reset thing. Brad fixed it for me. Great guy.

Anyway, seriously beautiful job! I'm glad it worked out for you. I know a couple of people who run the the Weber Copper Caps in their 5e3. It's a solid state rectifier that doesn't require filament power. They claim they get a little more power and more headroom and the power tranny runs cooler and lasts longer. I don't know, I like the dynamics of the 5e3 as well as the compression and sag. I think that's what makes it so unique. You play the 5e3 like an instrument. Good luck with the amp!

Snowy,
May be too early to tell yet but how would you compare the tone of this with the Blues Junior?

I think you're right Snowy, I get no flub with the GZ34, and a lot of calrity with the tone around the middle. Plus, the trebble is way too much at 12. I'm using the Jensen C12Q and it supprised me how much bottom end this amp has. I wonder if Leo Fender would have used Jensen ceramic speakers if they were available during the 50s.

One correction, at home I have the volume little over 1.5 and just under 2.

Hi tyronne, I haven't tried a back to back with a BJ, but having had a BJ for over 10 years I can say my initial and unbiased  opinion is that it's not even close, the BJ has a some extra headroom but beyond that it's just not fair to compare these two amps.

The 5E3 just has a much more, hard to describe, "organic feel" to it, is a lot more touch-sensitive and reactive to picking dynamics, has a fatter sound, substantially more bottom end and the overdrive tone is just on another level altogether, much smoother and with a nice natural compression.

I guess the problem is now that I've built this thing the satisfaction level involved in playing through it is just going to spoil me unless I absolutely need that headroom that comes with a different amp.

TTSC, I think the Jensen C12Q is the speaker that Fender is putting in the Custom Shop built '57 Deluxes as well. Mine has the Jensen MOD 12/50 speaker and I'm happy with how nice it sounds, I have no experience with this speaker and hadn't heard or read anything about it, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm pleasantly surprised.
