Now that's a "bitchin" system, Arjay! Very vintage! Hehe.

Forgot to mention, there's also a Cerwin-Vega 15-inch powered sub in the system -- 'nother 80 watts a side IIRC. Some serious LF potential.

except mp3's aren't "real" music quality.

Hi tyronne,
The Texas Heat is working out really well, it's a very efficient and loud speaker and likes being played loud, it's a bit like an amp in that it gets to a point where it comes alive and the sensitivity seems to increase. The overdrive is smooth, even when pumping out a shuffle in E fully cranked you get the tube overdrive without any speaker flub, which is how I like it.

The thing is, this amp can deliver a LOT of low end with fat Mids and a nice top end, so the speaker really gets a workout if you crank things up. I'm liking the amp's Tone control around 4-ish with my Strats plugged into the Bright channel. I'd have to say I'm a bit of a fan of the speaker, it just delivers whatever the amp dishes out with no fuss and nice tone, I'd say it's a good gigging player's speaker for this amp. But with all that said, if you like to use the amp for noodling around at home, and lower volume, you might prefer a much less efficient speaker to get you to that "woken-up" spot earlier.

All a matter of taste.

Snowy

Nice match up with the cream knobs and laqured tweed. That dark tweed finish realy looks great. Good job Snowy.

Well guys, have another one of these kits on the way to me now. I decided to act now while the Aussie Dollar is hanging at 1:1 with the US dollar, plus while the fire to build is burning I should make hay while the sun is shining.

This time around I have substituted F&T and Sprague Orange Drop caps into the parts list. My plan is to build this one and then cherry-pick the one I want to keep and try to find a new home for the other, if I can.

Needless to say, the second one will have to be pretty darn good for me to keep it, as I have a real sentimental soft spot for this first build.

Just out of curiosity, what made you go with F&T instead of the Sprague Atom, Snowy?

Snowy,

Glad to hear your building another 5e3. Do you plans to make the new one vintage spec with transformers and filter caps?

Nice Snowy! Looking forward to seeing your posts on this 2nd one.
Will the speaker be different too?

Hey guys,

rjake, I did have a look at the Sprague Atoms and to be honest I didn't really base my choice to use the F&T's on anything other than they looked to be more compact and still seemed to be a reputable quality cap.

TTSC, thanks mate, I thought about going back to Vintage specs for the Transformers and actual cap values, but you know, I really do think the guys at The Tube Depot are onto something with the way they have spec'd the values for this amp, kind of like a recipe that just works very well. I thought about swapping in straight Tweed Deluxe Transformers and a 5Y3 Rectifier but I changed my mind, I thought The Deluxe Reverb Transformers and the GZ34 Rectifier seem to give the amp a bit more beef and output than a trad 5e3, I'd say the amp retains the flavour but is probably more versatile for it.
Nothing's carved in stone yet, other than I would have a couple of spare Transformers here that could be used for something else, I might even email Rob Hull and ask for his thoughts on the topic.

tyronne, I'm not sure yet about the speaker, I ordered without it and it's something I will have to decide on. I do have a soft spot for the Texas Heat, I think it's a great fit for the amp. A speaker I would like to try is a Scumback H75, I hear good things about those, but they are rare in this neck of the woods.

I don't want to bore people with documenting a build again, unless that's what people want, I'm happy enough to do it if it's felt it will add value to the forum. I get a lot out of the forum so I don't mind.

Snowy,

I agree, the Tubedepot folks put together a great sounding 5e3. Sort of like a blackface Deluxe Reverb with tone stack bypass, and tremolo and reverb bypass, and with Tweed Deluxe mojo.

For what it’s worth: I feel your post of the 5e3 build was very helpful, and I for one would like to see another if you decide to do another build. Pictorial amp builds are great to learn from and it's fun to see the progress in HD.

+1

Top-notch pics and a cogent narrative are always helpful and appreciated!
