Thanks folks,

FXA, there's not much new to show or hear on that front, it's pretty much a true to breed 5E3 Deluxe to listen to. 8)

Very nice job, Snowy! It has to be hard to take your time when you're eager to finish it so you can play!

I've seriously been thinking about a 5e3 kit from Marsh Amps. Anyone have any experience with them?

Great build Snowy, your amp looks amazing and thanks for taking us throught he journey. I really enjoyed viewing your day to day/week to week progress. It's inspired me to one day try a build of my own. I've built effects pedals in the past but nothing this detail oriented. I'm now looking forward to it thanks to this thread. Thanks again and enjoy.

Well, I just got done reading and reviewing this build from start to finish. Wow, I am so very impressed Snowy - also with all of the technical banter that was going on throughout the thread, I learned quite a bit about amp building, technical specifications and testing. Thanks to everyone! I will not however, be building an amp anytime soon. My pea sized brain and my incessent need to race to the finish line would immediately create a smoking disaster.

I sure do like though how neat and orderly the layout, wiring, soldering, photos, etc. looks / is on this amp bulid. For a guy like me who is pro-organization I can say with confidence.........Well Done!!!!

Thanks again Snowy and everyone for your time, expertise, and insight!!!

Great job Snowy!
I have a '57 Deluxe Reissue and I use a 12AY7 also,it sounds better to me.
I've been wanting to build a 5E3 for awhile now, after watching your posts,I think it might be my next project.

Rebelsoul - Do It!.... If you already like what your '57 has to offer then I can almost guarantee the one you build yourself will find a special place in you, you will bond with it like no other!

It's also a bit addictive, I enjoyed it so much, I'm already saving madly for another of these kits!

Beaubs, the funny thing is, while building this amp I never once felt the urge to rush it and it was more a case of finding myself really indulging in the details and the enjoyment/satisfaction of getting everything just how I wanted it to be. You are right though, that kind of thing might not be everyone's cup of tea and when tackling something like this, any tendency to rush through is ENEMY NUMBER 1.

Thanks Tissan, your tip on the "Dim Bulb Tester" was a good one and it came in handy when I fired her up for the first time.

Being on holidays at the moment with some spare time on my hands I got curious and decided to fit an Emminence Texas Heat speaker that I happened to have.

Wow! I love that speaker in this amp, it just brought out more of everything this amp has. The touch-sensitivity, fatness and volume just went up another couple of notches.

http://eminence.com/guitar_speaker_detail.asp?model=TEXASHEAT&speaker_size=12&SUB_CAT_ID=4

A very worthwhile swap-in!

I don't wanna piss in anybody's Wheaties but the best use I can think of for a Jensen "MOD" speaker is, rip the paper cone from the basket and replace with tin foil, then use it as a friggin' ash tray.

Yeah, Arjay I'm not sure why I didn't just order the kit with no speaker and put the Texas Heat in first up, live and learn I guess. It's certainly made a big difference (and that's to an amp that sounded really great with the MOD in it! ). I also have a brand new Jensen P12R sitting in a box that'll come in handy as a backup ashtray, now that you've given me an idea of what to actually use it for!!

The P12R, after a suitable break-in period, may sound pretty tasty in your 5E3 clone. Give it a chance.

Ouch! Always enjoy your brutal honesty Arjay!!

Is it because of the materials used or quality of construction or both?
How does a body figure out what speaker to go with if it's all based on "sound".
No place to really audition speakers..that I know of.

The "MOD" an entry-level speaker built to the lowest price point possible for people who don't know any better but are vaguely familiar with the Jensen reputation of yore (not that the rest of the contemporary import Jensens are regarded as the "pick of the litter" either, as far as musical instrument speakers go).

Indeed, it's all about "sound" and what pleases your ears. Listen to as many different speakers as possible through amps similar to your own to determine their fitness for your sonic style. Talk with players and find out what they think about speaker performance. The only "right" speaker is the one you prefer the best.

There is what I feel is a pretty honest sound clip of each speaker Eminence sells. I think it's a pretty good gauge of what each speaker they sell does well, even through the computer. (I've got an old Kenwood amp and a set of Bose bookshelves hooked to the computer, just what I had laying around after lightning took out my Altec Lansing computer speaker system. I haven't really had the urge to buy a computer speaker system yet. Pretty lame, huh?)

If I ever develop the motivation, I'll download all those Emi clips to my hard drive and burn them to a CD-R. Then I can listen to them on a real system*.

Arjay

*"real system" consists of a DC-coupled 100W/ch Pioneer amp wired to a pair of JBL 4312 Studio Monitors.
