I have a Fender 212 DSP solidstate amp and in the manual it mentions you can plug it into other amps through the PRE-AMP OUT / POWER-AMP IN jacks in the back but that's all it really says. I want to plug it into a cabinet or maybe plug another combo into it but I can't figure it out. Can I get some help?

-Thanks!

Oh and does anyone know what kind of pickups are in a squire tele? As in Alcino 1, 2, 5, or ceramic?

Hi benlewis08,

The "Preamp Out" on your amp can be connected to the input jack on another amp, or to the "Power Amp In" on another amp. Neither can be used to connect speakers. An external speaker cabinet would be hooked up to the "speaker output jack" on your amp (if you have one), but you should make sure that the speaker impedance is correct.

Thanks but now I've another question. What happens if I do connect an amp to mine via PRE-AMP OUT if neither can be used to connect speakers? Will the other amp act as a cabinet and mine as a head? (Sorry about the noob questions by the way. Haha I've been playing a year but I haven't got anyone I know to ask about this stuff)

Think of it more as a master amp and a slave amp. You will be using both amps with their internal speakers at the same time. The amp that your guitar is plugged into is the master, and the tone controls and volume on the master will affect the tone and volume of the slave. Any speakers will connect to the output jack(s) of the amps. You can unhook either amps internal speaker, as long as you connect another speaker or speaker cabinet in it's place, you must have some speaker hooked up to your amp, don't use an amp without a speaker connected. And you should match the speaker impedance to the amp impedance if you change speakers. For example, 2x12 speakers are 4 ohms. If you unhook those two speaker, you must hook up another speaker or speakers that are 4 ohms also. :)

Preamp out -> power amp in -> speaker cab

Remember a combo amp is pre-amp, power amp and speaker in one box.

A preamp does not have enough power to drive speaker cabs, it needs a power amp.

You can hook a preamp into the guitar input of a combo amp, but it will overdrive the front of the combo unless you can turn the preamp output way down to match the output of a instrument. To use any amp as a slave its really needs a power amp in.

Many combo amps have a speaker out jack or external speaker jack, and this will drive a speaker/cab. As others have stated, you need to match impedences or you risk amp transformer and/or tube damage.

A a rule of thumb, you can attach at speaker with higher impedences (I wouldn't go more that double), but this will lower the power output. never run a speaker that is rated lower as this will make the transformer overheat

edit-if you are crafty and there is not speaker out, you could pull the wires off the internal speaker, and soldier and speaker cable to it. You need to know which is the positive and negative so the speaker is not out-of-phase, then drive a cab
