I own a Hot Rod Deluxe. Its clean channels are absolutely amazing and it takes pedals very well (Radial Tonebone PexiTube for Marshall sounds and a Maxon OD-9 for light OD). Its Drive and More Drive channels are terrible imho.

I'd look into the Blues Deluxe as well. I've played a Blues Deluxe and I liked it a lot, I also really like my HRD. I've never A/B'ed the two amps, but since the More Drive channel on the Hot Rod is useless anyway and the BD is only a little bit more expensive, you might as well give it a shot. I've heard it's slightly warmer sounding.

Yeah, I love my clean channel too. I quit using the drive channel though. My TS9DX fits perfectly with the tone of the amp. There's not much difference between the HD and BD.

I had a Hot Rod Deluxe for a few years and it was a very good sounding amp....but way too loud for my basement playing purposes. Ended up selling it and getting a Blue's Jr. I'm very happy with the Jr. but in hindsight I kind of wish I'd have known about attenuators at the time. Weber apparently makes some very reasonably priced units that use a dummy speaker coil instead of resisters and they apparently are very transparent and don't kill your tone.

When you say "reasonably priced" you mean under $300, which is about 3/4 of the price of the amp.

Actually what was most attractive about the Weber attenuators (beyond their alleged excellent sound quality) were the prices......well under 200.00 for a unit that could handle a Hot Rod or Blues Deluxe. Weber recommends that the attenuator be rated for approx 2x's the output of the amp. So a Blue's Deluxe or Hot Rod would require an attenuator (at least a Weber) that is rated at 80 watts or more). About the same or less than a high end OD or distortion pedal, but you get real power tube OD at household volumes. Just to be clear, I'm not endorsing anyone going out and doing this, evrything I know about attenuators is based upon what I've read and other folk's opinions who actually use them.

Y'know, I've never really heard a bad thing about the BD before. I bought one just over a week ago, and I'm really, really happy with it. IMO when you really, really crank up the master channel, the OD isn't that amazing, but putting the old chicken head up to about 4-5-6 gets brilliant results.

Has anyone noticed the large increase in buzz with the S reverb turned on? I find that quite annoying when I'm playing at lower volumes, but as is always the way, when I crank up da volume, so to speak, the buzz goes away.

Hmm.

Yes indeed.

I just purchased a Hot Rod Deluxe (Red Wine - Celestion Speaker) version last month. While the name 'Hot Rod' does speak well about the amp, I must say that I am very happy with this so far. Even though, the 2nd channel does scream and muddy sound at low volumes, this channel does serve a purpose for those unique tones or rhythms if needed. Therefore, whether I use a pedal in front of the 2nd channel or just use the boost / more boost, or pedal on the clean channel, many combinations that can be enhanced with the EQ settings. If your choice of playing is limited to bedroom/apartment then this might not be the amp for you. However, if need an amp to gig with or jam with others where you need to volume/power range, then you will not be disappointed, providing you are not looking for one particular genre of music, if that is the case, then you may need to find that specific amp.

:D

I went down to the music store and played every tube amp in the place that cost less than $1000.00. The Hot Rod won hands down as the best sounding. It has been sitting proudly in my studio ever sence. For a guy on a buget this amp is a great choice. Blah Blah Blah, can't say enough good things about this amp.

Hi, I've got a blues dlx and love is, the drive channel is nice but depents on wich guitar I use and the PU's SC vs HB. adn off course the sound I need for the song. The clean sound i really nice and warm, but th amp is a little to loud for home use, it would be nicer if the threshold was a little lower. But overall i love the amp!!!

BTW my singal pad is Guitar->Dunlop standard wah->VS R66->CM Surf Trem->VS H2O-> Bdlx

My wife bought me a Blues Deluxe Re-Issue for Christmas. So as you guys can understand I have to use this amp. Trouble is that the venues I play in won't support volume levels past 1 1/2 or 2 on the master channel.
As a consequence I end up with a really crappy sound. I don't want to turn down the guitar because I need drive for the effects.
I understand that there is a device called an attenuator that might allow me to set the master at a higher volume but not blow the windows out.
Can anyone out there suggest a make model and source for a device that will accomplish this?
Thanks

I'd buy and overdrive pedal for $100 before I'd buy an attenuator for $350. The TDX Hot Plate is a popular one.

I have had my Hot Rod Deluxe for five years now. When I bought it I didn't know a lot about amps.

At times I was able to get good tone out of the clean channel, but over all the experience has been horrible.

The drive channels suck. I hate having features and functions that don't work.

The hanging tube sockets develop cracked solder joints after every two gigs. I learned how to fix them, but it is a major flaw.

You have to use a volume control between the pre and the power amp to get the best sound! Unless you are running the amp at 3/4 volume, which is too loud. I made my own, and I'm telling you that the difference is unreal you have to try it to beleive it. Ican get a 90% marshall sound with alittle tweaking and still have that clean Fender sound that we all bought this Amp. for!

Can you please explain how you do this. Do you mean to use the volume with the Loos feature?

I bought one of the first hot rod deluxes to come out. Changed the speaker though. All around one of the best sounding amps out there IMHO. Mine is still going strong with never a moments trouble.
