I recently got a set of (trio actually) Raytheon 6l6GC tubes. I am going to give them try in my BDRI but was wondering what I should use for the preamp? I have a matched pair of GE long plate 12AX7s and a Raytheon 12AU7A. How would that setup stack up? Any other ideas on the preamp section?

Thank You :?

When trying out tubes the ears are the best judge....you will be able to tell if you like it.
Just try whatever you have and see what sounds best, you can never go wrong with American tubes unless they're microphonic or just bad.

The 12AU7 is a relatively low-gain twin-triode. I'm not sure I see the application for a BD.

Arjay, finding a good sounding 12AU7 is a daunting task, IME. It's not only low gain, but non-linear (in a bad way, in my opinion). The best sounding 12AU7 (for PI use in some Ampeg amps which I've worked on) were CBS-Hytron 5814A, 7316, & 7318.

If you can make it work, the 12AY7 and its family, is a much better tube. If you need a lower gain (mu-wise, at least) section of your amp. 6072 is an outstanding tube. I've set some BF Fenders back to "tweed" first gain stage using this tube. In some amps, need to play with plate voltages & idle bias to get the tube to sing, at all volume ranges.

+1

Certainly a 12AU7 isn't likely to cause any harm in a Fender. But I too think a 12AY7 or 12AT7 is a better choice as a deliberately-attenuated gain stage (V1 or V2) for cooling down a pre-amp signal in order to more quickly drive the amp's output stage into compression and saturation. And of course either tube should be selected based on balanced transconductance between the halves if used a phase inverter.

Arjay, have you ever seen a Raytheon-made 6L6GC? This maybe a re-labeled GE, RCA, or Sylvania ? Most Raytheon power tubes that I have in my little stash, are mil spec. So they carry the military code. I don't have any JAN designated 6L6GC. Just a bunch of Sylvania and Philips JAN 7581A's.

Yes. I have several sets of Raytheons. Some in commercial boxes, a few as mil-spec in DLA-marked cartons.

They're great tubes -- right up there with the GE's and the Tung-Sols.
