while I play mostly through an old ouahu, I have a HRDvlle sitting in the corner that I would like to use once in a while. That is if I can make the volume pot a little less angry.. you know the issue, quiet at 1, quiet at 2, loud at 3, then is tearing the paint off the walls at 3.5... I kinda dig the clean channel on this amp once you turn it up enough to make the tubes work, but there is no way I can live with that kind of volume unless I hide the amp in the isolation box. can anyone point me to a good way to fix the volume pot so it's usable by humans?

Hi cjpeck,

Do you mean the "Master" volume for the drive channel? That is the touchy one on my HRDlx and HRDvl, isn't audio taper. The "Volume" for the clean channel is already an audio taper. Here is a replacement pot for the "Master" to make it audio taper. I have mine already, but haven't put it in yet. It isn't an exact replacement part (no mounting bracket), but will work just fine.

hmmm. I seem to have issues with both the master and the 'clean' volume pots. maybe I'll just swap out all the pots across the board.

Maybe you could try a 5751 or a 12AT7 for preamp position V1 for the clean channel, that would tame the volume somewhat. And maybe try a 5751 or 12AT7 for the drive channel in position V2 to tame the volume in that channel.

I think dumping the linear taper pot for an audio taper pot is pretty much the only way to effectively tame the volume problem. That was one of the issues that was addressed in the HRD III series.

Interesting, thanks 63supro. The schematic shows that the "Volume" is already and audio taper (A15), while the "Master" volume is linear (B). That's why I thought that the new pot in the III that was replaced was the "Master", as that is the one that is loud at 2 and too loud at 3. My "Volume" for the clean channel doesn't act that way, only the "Master". :? I wonder what kind of pot that Fender used, if they replaced the "Volume", an A30 or even a reverse audio taper (C)? But, the treble pot is listed as an A30, that one was changed also, wasn't it "...graduated volume and treble pot tapers..." I might email Fender and see if they will give some more details.

It sure seems like they have Linier taper pots regardless of what the schematic says. I have a similar issue. I love the amps and the tone but some paces we gig I can barely turn the pot up/on. I have smaller wattage amps, but like the tone of the deville. I'm planning on experimenting with 12AT7's in both or all positions.
