Place the amp from down and remove the screws on top and in the back.

Remove the chassis, take care of all the tubes and place it in the amp like this:
Image

Remove the knobs and all the nuts on the knobs and input jacks. Remove the cable connectors and clip the tie holding cables to the board on the right edge.

Remove the PCB carefully:

Turn over the PCB and locate C10 next to the Volume Pot:

Bend the cap out of one hole while holding a solder iron to it from the back

Assemble and enjoy playing low volume with less heights.

Consider breaking in the speaker by connecting a tone generator and applying some 60 Hz tone to give the speaker some serious massage to loosen the membrane edges :P I hope this will get me close to 'real' blackface sounds and remove the last icepick remains in my DRRI:

Great photo essay, Jim!

With the amp "disemboweled" in this manner, it's also easier to perform the "Fritz" mod.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, the bright cap is on the vibrato channel.

The Fritz mods will also work on the re-issue SR and TR.

In addition to adding reverb and tremolo to the normal channel, the Fritz mod will put both channels in phase with each other so you can jump them.

+1

I can't think of a single reason not to do the Fritz mod!

I left my bright cap (C10) alone and use the vibrato channel for my Les Pauls -- it helps to put some nice biting overtones to a humbucker.

I plug my Strats into the normal channel. This saves me some set-up time, not having to adjust volume levels or re-EQ whenever I change guitars during a set and I always have the reverb and trem available.
