My local shop just got some Valvetrain amps in. One of their models is based on a 5W 5F2A Princeton circuit that has an oversized relic'd tweed cabinet stuffed with a 12inch Eminence speaker or 2 8 inch Weber Alnicos. Hand wired, made in USA for under $1000. So yeah, $1000 for just a run of the mill Fender Champ is too much ^^

It's not worth a grand to me. You can build a Tweed Champ kit for less than half that. You can build a 5E3 for $600 or less. It depends on how much the word Fender is worth to you. I've heard some really fine sounding kits that to my ears sound every bit as good if not better than the Fender reissues. You can actually find a real 50's Tweed Champ for not much more coin that the reissue.

I agree......built both a 5F1 & a 5e3. Not real difficult & they are both FANTASTIC amps. Total cost around $1000.

That Valvetrain 205 tallboy is a very interesting amp. I need to find and try one out.

Regarding your question is the Reissue Fender 5f1 worth $1000, or could you spend your money better elsewere. The answer is yes, it is worth $1000, and Yes you can spend your money better elsewere. The reissue 57 Fender Champ is one excellent amp I saw some pics and it looks like the chassis was modified with vents on the side and there is sheilding aroung the inputs, but the wiring did not look to neat. Anyway, when you figure out the cost involved of making, marketing, shipping, and selling the amp it is worth $1000. Labor itself is hand wired (I suppose by American Labor) which involves great cost per hour, not to mention insurance, workers comp, unions, administrations, etc. And there's marketing/advertising for fender, and the shipping, and selling (GC, MF, etc.) they all got to make a profit too. The second part of your question is yes, and the previous posts give good indication of that. I am in no way ranting or saying capitolism is bad, I'm mearly pointing out that most of the cost for the Fender 57 Champ is divided among many people. Not equally of course.

I didn't see pics, I saw it in person and played it and this is just my opinion, it's not worth with a grand. The 5F1 can be built in just a few hours by a novice. It only has a handful of parts. The amp was designed in 1957 so no R&D was needed. It's a one knob one trick pony practice/recording amp. If you're handy and skip the whole kit thing and go to Mouser Electronics for the components, you can build one for way little money. There is really no need for that Champ to cost that much money. There are hand wired kits already built for less as well as Deluxe 5e3's. It's your money.

And if you're in NY I can sell you a 5e3 head I no longer need for $200. :)

Is the amp worth it to you? Do you plan to keep it for 20-30 years or sell it in 2-3 years? I paid about $450 for my Carvin guitar in 1986 and about $420 for my Carvin amp in 1985. I still use them both. It wouldn't have mattered if I'd paid $1000+ for each of them. Averaged out over 24-25 years it would be worth it.

In May I bought the most expensive piece of musical equipment of my life so far, an electric blue Deluxe Reverb Reissue with an Alnico Blue Celestion. I got it on closeout for the fantastic price of $950. I won't sell it (I sold my 1966 DR, idiot me). At my current age ot 58 I intend to enjoy it till my late 80s :) The temporary pain of departed $$s has past. Now I can enjoy my purchase.
