Brought a Fender 65 twin reissue second hand. Since it arrived I've found a number of things wrong with it which I'm trying to fix:

1. The volume drops to a lower level intermittantly

2. The amp crackles intermittantly and sometimes sounds muffled (Leads and guitars checked all ok)

3. The quality of sound is poor and it overdrives with the vol at around 4 or 5 although the mixture of fender tubes with what appear to be cheap tubes is hopfully the issue(the tubes have no brand written on except 'made in china' printed on them). I'm thinking a replacement set of Fenders will sort this.

4. Its not hugely loud-around 7-8 vol and it's pretty loud but not 85 watts loud.

now its second hand and the guy I brought it off swears it was fine when he posted it (he also said it has a complete set of Fender tubes in there and was 'pristine' even though it has scratches and rust on it!!) I'm in the process of itemising a bill for the damage to the Courier as it is insured but this is hard to do when I cannot figure the problem.

Spent a lot of money on this and need to claim some back as it has been damaged! I'm already going to claim for another enclosure for it as the corner joint has also been damaged and is about to break!

Does anybody have any ideas on this one?
Please Help!!

Hi slash1231,

First, make sure that all of the tubes are seated properly, pushed in tightly in the sockets. They could have gotten loose during shipping. Tubes could have been damaged in shipping also, it's possible. When you say "intermittent" problems, that usually indicates possible bad/broken solder joints. Crackling noises can be bad preamp tubes and/or solder joint problems. If you have new tubes to try, that would be the easiest thing to check to start with.

I've already reseated them (I forgot to mention) and the problem is still there. Going to need a new set of tubes anyway but its impossible to tell if any of the tubes are really damaged-the only option is to buy a whole set. I may have to open up the chassis and have a look myself and spray some electrical cleaner on the joints and look for any dodgy soldering although I know nothing about electronics!!
As long as we can rule out the output transformer, capacitors and transistors then I'm happy because wouldn't know what to do with them if they went wrong.

Don't spray anything on the circuit or joints, or anywhere in the amp!!! No reason for that, and it could make things worse. The transformer is likely OK. The caps would have to be tested to know what shape that they are in, unless they show visible signs of failure (bulging or leaking).

But, most importantly, be aware that even when the amp is unplugged from electricity, it can still have lethal voltages inside. If you know nothing of electricity or amps and components, you would be wise to not open the amp. Seriously, be safe.

This sounds similar to problems i have had !as a matter of fact i am on my 2nd 65 twin reissue blonde .the first one i took back to the retailer after 23 days and it was swapped out for the other one they had .the 2nd one lasted 3 yrs before developed the same problem which i keep pushing it as we were gigging heavly until it took a crap. I took it in to a certified amp tech and the problem was a loose capacitor in the bias circut which finaly broke free and sent the tube circut out of bias and burnt up the tranny ! 1#I had to replace the tranny 2# replaced the capacitor that caused the problem .Ive read blogs stating there were problems with certain capicitors that had bad bends in the lead wires in and out of the capacitors breaking under stress from vibration and heat !3# i had a cooling fan installed to reduce heat on the tranny.
It sounds to me the amp is not biased properly and or may have a bad capacitor in the bias circut
Hope this helps !Have a certified amp tech look at it !

If problem number one happened to my twin, i would'nt complain about it at all! :D

But the other three sure are a bummer...
