Hi everyone. I purchased a Tweed Blues Junior in March 2010. Re-tubed the amp with JJ’s immediately, and found the amp to fit my needs perfectly. Then last week while playing the amp began to produce a LOUD “honking” sound. My guitar signal was no longer audible. Frankly, it gave me quite a scare.

I immediately turned the amp off and caught my breath. After about 3 minutes, I turned it back on and all seemed fine. The amp/guitar sounded normal. Then after about 3 minutes, the honk came back like before. My guitar signal could not be heard at all, only this loud honk. I tried to turn the volume down on the lead and master both with no effect to the honk. So I turned all the knobs including reverb. No effect at all. I turned the amp off for good.

My next step was to take the back off to inspect the board. Nothing looked out of sorts. The caps were not noticeably leaking. The tubes are secure. No burn marks on the boards, etc.

I found a local service center and took it in for repair. When I went back to pick the amp back up, the technician said all it was a bad filter off V1. EDIT: He also replaced both EL84 Power Tubes. Great. Except...

I brought the amp back home, turned it on to allow it to warm up and before I could even plug in my guitar the amp started making the sound again. It's almost like there is a timer on the amp that after 3 minutes it turns into a honking alarm clock.

I'd value any input into what this could be before I take it back to the service center. Thoughts? Thank you!

Hi rip36,

It sounds like one of your output tubes could be the problem. Try putting your originals back in (both) and check for the noise. It could also be a preamp tube, but I'm thinking output tube. If not, you have a five year warranty that might be voided if you mess around inside the amp, just take it back. You might be able to exchange it, maybe not.

Thank you shimmilou. I edited my original post to include that the technician also replace the two power tubes.

Oh, OK, well then, my next thought would be the preamp tube that had the bad "filter" (V1), I assume that the filter is a capacitor. You can try replacing the preamp tubes one at a time, with a known good one, start with V1. Put in the new tube in V1, if noise still there, put back original tube than try the new tube in V2, etc. If you don't have a new tube, try swapping the preamp tubes around, move V1 to V2, and V2 to V1, then see if the noise is still there. Then swap V2 to V3, and V3 to V2.

That did it. Bad V2 or V3 tube. I replaced just the V1 first, but the honk came back. So I replace the other two. Fixed. Thanks again!

ebay or craigslist...

Or, if your tech can't get it solved after a 2nd warranty visit, email Fender's Customer Service and see if they can get involved. I had that happen after two trips for warranty service on my Hot Rod Dlx. The tech, while VERY experienced tried numerous ideas to solve my issue - including changing out filter caps, plate resistors, re-flowing multiple solder joints, new tubes, new tube socket at V3...finally after 15 days in his shop and contact use as the shops "test" amp...it was good to go. Haven't had a problem since. He and I both emailed Fender custom service for warranty and tech help on the amp. It's a shame that active involved from the user/buyer is necessary to get these things fixed...but, imho that is the nature of mass produced consumer goods these days.

Man, you sho...... got that right! Do you remember what it was that finally fixed your HRDlx? I have a '98 and have had a broken circuit trace and had to replace the power supply caps due to leaking, but not bad for 10 years, still sounds good with original output tubes. :)
