I know he usually uses twin reverb combos but Eric Johnson is using a Fender half-stack in the "Eric Johnson - Live From Austin Tx" DVD. Can somebody tell me what this is?

The amps appear to be a pair of Twin Reverbs converted to a head-only configuration.

Noteworthy as well, he is not playing an EJ signature Strat -- the guitar seems to be a '56 NOS re-issue.

is there an advantage to converting a twin reverb to a head, rather than just using the combo?

I'd expect they'd both have the soft "V" contour and similar fretboard radius.

As soon as I saw the string tree on the headstock I knew it wasn't his signature model.

Ever lug a Twin Reverb around for any length of time?

Aside from lightening a roadie's load, the primary benefit to a head conversion lets the player mate the amp to any stand-alone 4-ohm enclosure without dragging the larger cabinet around with its unneeded (or unwanted) self-contained speakers. The Marshall 1960 cabinet stuffed with V30's is particularly tasty when used with a Fender tube amp.

Naw,I have that video at home and have watched it several times,I even saw it when it was on TV the first time....those Strats he's using are real deal vintage,in some shots you can see the cracks in the the single ply pickguards and holes in the p/u covers.
That Fender head in the background is hard to tell for sure but I think the head is a Bandmaster if my memory serves me correctly....but us old guys know how that is.
