Yeah Arjay, joined the Musician's Union in 1966, in LA(needed that for clubs). Let it lapse, until I started playing in the Chicago area in the 80's. Let that lapse when we moved out to the Northwestern areas, out here we just had to pay off bogus managers for certain clubs. How corrupt is that system ? Joined the Teamsters Union in 1972, 30 years active. Seems like I always ended up in union workplaces, Oh Well . Art---- off topic, my apologies ! BTW Do you guys still mess with ASCAP and BMI ? Art

I was only an AFM member for a couple of years, beginning in late '67 (Local 175 -- Trenton, Ill). I got drafted after that and never bothered with it again. Still got my wallet ID somewhere among the rest of my personal curios.

I was with local 542 for a short time driving for Roadway.
Bills were too much at the time and being at the bottom put me last on the seniority list. My advice to any driver planning to join the Teamtsers is have a thick wad of cash in the bank before you do. At least 2 years worth to live off of while you wait to move up the seniority ladder.

I haven't read all of the other responses to your post, but I will offer my 2 cents anyway.

I usually mic my amp no matter where I'm playing. My bass player, who runs sound for us, insists on it. At first I thought it was just an extra pain in the $@! step at setup and loadout, but I see his point now. No matter how sweet sounding your amp is to you on stage, some of it is inevitably going to be lost once it gets out front. Even in a small room, when you have the sound dialed in just right, chances are it will be a little loud for people up front and not loud enough for those at the back (i.e. at the bar). That's not even factoring in crowd noise because, if you're like me, I imagine often times your band is background music for some people. Throwing a little guitar into the PA is relatively easy and really is a no-lose situation. Hope this helps.

Good point JP ! If we were just playing for ourselves, than just plug in and go. But your opinion is very considerate of the house sound and all the folks ! Got to admit, set-up & tear-down was the down side of gigging for me. Just lazy, I guess. And driving home after bartime was no comfort at all. Don't get me wrong ! I wouldn't trade one minute of my past playing experiences for anything. Well maybe, for a Lexus and a lodge in Canada. Art

I always mic everything. it's all about tone, right? If you tend to play smaller clubs, why would you carry a huge twin or 60 watt deville or whatever? Too loud for the room = crappy tone. get a smaller (lower wattage) amp and get the tone people who are paying to hear you deserve to hear. plus you can keep your stage volume down to a point where you can hear the rest of the band (novel concept I know) and keep the band tight. plus when you're 50 you'll still be able to hear. Let the pa do the work.

I play a late 70's strat, a heavily mod'd FSR mexitele, and a 6120 through a 1948 12-13 watt Oahu. No effects, just plug straight into the amp. Well, I do use a tuner, but lately have been trying a clip-on-the-headstock digital tuner in hopes of being able to leave the tuner out of the signal path.

A Gretsch through an Oahu ? That's gotta sound great, CJ ! I've got a '55 Oahu(3-5watt) 2-6SN7, 6V6, 5Y3. And I've used that amp mic'd in Legion halls and at church. Very cool, man. Art

Depends on the venue and who's running the board!

You're probably right, BTC -- that pic has been a skoshed "over-exposed".

And in any case those represent a serious rig for an outdoor venue. Currently I'm using this "stack" for most of my work......

I mic one of the Showman's D130Fs using a AKG D1000-E
